The CoCOS (CollaborativeCommunityOptimizingSurvivorship) Lab, within the Department of Pediatrics and Division of Hematology, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation & Regenerative Medicine, utilizes community-engaged research to improve equitable health outcomes for childhood cancer survivors and their families. Central to this work is our community–academic partnership with Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services (https://www.jacobsheart.org/), a community-based nonprofit organization supporting families of children with cancer in a 4-county, predominantly rural and majority Hispanic/Latino region in the Salinas Valley (region includes Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito, and south Santa Clara counties). Our research is inspired by design thinking (a method of creative problem solving) and guided by community-based participatory research principles with bidirectional trust and collaboration at every level.

Our active grant-supported research projects involve rigorous qualitative methods and apply human-centered design principles to develop new programs (interventions, toolkits) that will be pilot tested and refined based on multistakeholder (community/academic) input, with the overall goal of improving childhood cancer survivors’ long-term health and engagement in recommended survivorship care.

Stanford University, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation & Regenerative Medicine, is seeking a Research Professional (Social Science Research Professional 2) tocontribute to our community-engaged research projects focused on childhood cancer survivors and their families. This role involves working closely with Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services, managing multiple grant-supported research initiatives, and providing guidance to less experienced colleagues, and requires independent initiative and judgment.

Duties include:

· Experiment Design & Contribution: Assist in designing and coordinating experimental protocols for multiple active research projects utilizing community-based participatory research methods and behavioral intervention design, development, and pilot testing.

· Data Collection & Qualitative Data Analysis: Develop data collection instruments, lead interviews and focus groups, and analyze qualitative data using scientific methods and team-based software (e.g., Dedoose).

· Procedure Development: Adapt and implement new procedures for study operations, including convening multidisciplinary advisory boards and designing intervention pilot tests.

· Problem-Solving & Decision-Making: Address research challenges and make decisions to troubleshoot issues, collaborate on intervention materials, and manage multiple project timelines.

· Research Publications: Co-author sections of academic manuscripts, prepare figures and tables, and maintain references. Develop infographics for participants/lay public. Lead written progress reports for research grants.

· Administrative Support: Manage grant-related incentives and budgetary responsibilities, schedule advisory board meetings with stakeholders, and assist with meeting operations and note/record keeping.

· Supervision & Training: Oversee and train students/trainees in qualitative research methods and provide guidance on project work.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the University reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs. The pay range for this position working in the California Bay area is $75,000. to $92,000.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in public health or related field

Previous qualitative research experience

Previous experience with scientific writing

Interest in working in a position for at least two (2) years

Interest in maintaining community partnerships that lead to effective, collaborative research

Interest in childhood cancer survivorship, adolescent/young adult populations, and public health/advocacy

Ability to work with diverse populations, including those with non-English language preference or low literacy levels

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (DESIRED) : Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, health policy, social science, or related field

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (DESIRED) :

· Strong interpersonal skills.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills

· Exceptional organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once

· Fluent in Spanish and English

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office

  • Ability to drive to off-site community partner location (Watsonville, CA) occasionally for research activities

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or combination of education and experience in an applicable social science.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

· Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

· Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.
