What Would You Do?

  • Perform monthly substation inspections and recommend any corrective action noted.

  • Ensure compliance with safety standards (NESC, RUS, RESAP)

  • Perform minor switching inside substations, including writing switching procedures.

  • Perform basic repairs to low voltage substation equipment including battery systems, area lights, control buildings, security systems, oil containment systems, substation grounds.

  • Perform tests on insulating oil and ensure proper handling, marking and storage.

  • Respond to and mitigate equipment oil spills according to environmental regulations.

  • Test and verify installation of all transformer-rated meters. Periodically test, calibrate, and repair all other meters, as required.

  • Install and maintain cooperative’s standby generation equipment, Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) equipment in substations and components of other communication equipment.

  • Assist the Manager of Technical Services in planning and implementing area objectives.

  • Assist with installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of all substation and distribution line equipment, documenting all tests and repairs performed.

  • Assist with installation and maintenance of SCADA equipment in substations.

  • Assist with power restoration efforts during major storms, by working as a ground man, alongside qualified linemen, or as a bird dog, as qualified by knowledge and experience.

Skills & Requirements

What Do You Need?

  • High school graduate, or equivalent.

  • Formal training in electrical, electronics, and/or computer technology is desirable.

  • 2 years’ work experience in electrical installation or maintenance is preferred.

  • Experience in electric utility operations is desirable.

  • Knowledge of basic electricity, mechanical repair, and electrical safety.

  • Knowledge of computer applications such as Word and Excel preferred.

  • Valid NC driver’s license with a good driving record.

  • This position requires that the person live or be willing to relocate within 20 miles of the EnergyUnited office located in Statesville, NC.
