Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience in marine operations and one of the following U.S Coast Guard credentials:

  1. Able-Bodied Seaman (AB)

  2. Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED)

    Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) will be required by the hiring agency at the time of appointment.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To serve as an apprentice operator aboard a ferry vessel.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Entry.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Direct from a Ferryboat Supervisor. May also receive guidance from a higher-level Ferryboat Operator. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

May provide guidance to lower-level Ferryboat personnel.

LOCATION OF WORK:

Department of Transportation and Development. Other locations may be approved by SCS.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Ferryboat Deckhand 3 by the presence of a serving as an apprentice operator aboard a ferry vessel.

Differs from Ferryboat Operator 2 by the absence of experienced operator duties aboard a ferry vessel.

Examples of Work

35% Tows disabled ferry vessels, barges, mooring pontoons, other floating equipment, performs routine engine room operation, and operates other mechanical equipment onboard vessels.

30% Ensures proper maintenance is maintained for efficient operation of vessel and assists in making engine room repairs. Ensures the proper oiling and greasing of marine equipment such as diesel engines, pumps, shafts, bearings, etc.

20% May operate marine diesel engines and other machinery, relieves engineer on throttle watch, and maintains operating logs and submits reports.

5% Inspects levels in fuel, water, oils, and sewage tanks,

5% Operates small passenger vessel during emergencies, other vessels during movement operation, and serves a deckhand as required

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activity.

Additional Responsibility/ Requirements: Possession of the following: (1) Transportation Worker Identification Credential (2) U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing License.
