General Dynamics Land Systems Material and Analysis Engineer in Sterling Heights, Michigan
Responsibilities to Anticipate for this role: Candidate shall possess a solid working knowledge of metallic & non-metallic engineering materials (including but not limited to steel, aluminum, titanium, polymers, adhesives and coatings). Complete command of mechanical and physical property characteristics, as well as understanding of test techniques to evaluate them are also considered essential. Candidate shall be able to apply principles of failure analysis and fractography. Candidate should have an understanding of weld joint design, proper procedural callouts, and how weld processing and joint design influence vehicle structure. Perform independent failure analysis of vehicle hardware and raw stock materials. Perform hands-on laboratory tests and deliver comprehensive analysis reports. Applicant must work well independently, exhibit professional work habits, and have good communications skills (both written and oral). Candidate shall be required to Interface with a variety of engineering groups and personnel to identify proper material callouts for engineering structures, components and sub-assemblies. Candidate should be able to support all vehicle production through proper review of engineering drawings and models as they relate to materials science. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Sought: Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy or Materials Engineering required. 0-1 years of experience, internship experience desired. Primarily laboratory and office environment. Includes periodic light lifting (up to 30 lbs). Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite. Occasional travel to other GDLS locations, suppliers and USG installations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required to interface with internal and external engineering organizations as well as ability to work independently. Thorough understanding of Military and Commercial specifications and standards that are applicable to vehicle fabrication is desirable. A willingness to understand and learn these specifications is essential. This position will require eligibility to obtain a US security clearance. (Non-US Citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance) This position requires the candidate to be able to climb on/off, work in, and work around military vehicles is desired. Must be able to pass ASR (Anthropometric Size Requirement) for confined space.
