Stony Brook Medicine (Stony Brook University Hospital) Plant Utilities Engineer 2 (HVAC) - Full Time Day Shift in Stony Brook, New York

Position Summary

Plant Utilities Engineer 2 is a working supervisor with direct responsibility for the operation, preventive maintenance and repair of a full range, in size, type and pressure, of steam or hot water boilers and auxiliary heating system equipment, and the mechanical equipment outside of the power plant. This can include, but is not limited to, steam lines, mechanical equipment rooms, refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment of various types, chillers, pumps, air compressors, temperature and humidity control systems, plumbing systems, pneumatic and electronic computerized control systems, auxiliary and emergency generators, portable emergency equipment, transformers, switch gear, electrical distribution systems, sprinkler and fire safety systems, elevators and HVAC fan systems, fired and unfired pressure vessels and water treatment systems, such as water softeners, chlorination systems, deionized water systems, and ph adjustment systems.

Duties of a Plant Utilities Engineer 2 may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Schedules staff to insure adequate coverage on all shifts.
  • Assigns staff to maintenance and repair projects providing oral and written instructions including technical manuals, blueprints, specifications and plans.
  • Observes and inspects work while in progress and when completed to insure the proper use of materials, workmanship, that safety regulations and relevant codes are followed, that schedules are met and that work is performed according to plan.
  • Assists staff by providing training, instruction and assistance in the performance of specific tasks.
  • Implements and enforces operation and safety procedures, policies and schedules for all "Engineering Department" operations.
  • Reviews specifications and drawings for outside contractors and inside work.
  • Inspects work performed by outside contractors to insure conformance to project plans and specifications.
  • Periodically inspects plant equipment and operations to insure proper maintenance, scheduling, and safe and efficient operations.
  • Schedules preventive maintenance and repair work.
  • Prepares estimates of materials and parts needs and costs.
  • Orders or directs the ordering of materials, equipment and parts, and maintains tool and equipment inventory according to prescribed procedures.
  • Maintains written records and narrative reports of work performed and accounts for labor and materials used.
  • Reviews equipment log and daily operating records to insure proper and economical operation.
  • Implements changes in operating procedures to improve efficiency.
  • Oversees the maintenance of computerized energy management systems, Direct Digital controls, installation of microprocessor based hardware and software and the performance of system and operational adjustments.
  • Oversees the performance of minor asbestos removal projects to facilitate repairs and/or supervise any asbestos removal project being carried out by other employees or private contractors.
  • Supervises the handling of various types of hazardous materials, such as refrigerants, freon, gas, fuel oil, solvents, antifreeze, biocides, nitrates, amines, cyclohexylamine, marpholine, diethylamino ethanol, acids, caustic soda, regulated waste and refuse.
  • Supervises the response to incidents having potential environmental impact and/or safety concerns, such as chemical spills, oil spills, and blowouts, may be called upon to implement evacuation plans in emergency situations and maintains "right to know" library, response to inquiries, assessment of problems and provision of advice regarding right to know incidents.
  • Works in confined space situations using personal protective equipment and supervises others working in confined space using personal protective equipment.
  • Enforces energy conservation protocol.
  • Supervises the installation of new equipment and/or modification of existing equipment to operate at peak energy efficiency.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual operating budget by recommending the Engineering Department's budget requirements including repair and maintenance needs and staffing, material and equipment needs.
  • Periodically prepares standard written evaluations of subordinate employee work performance.
  • Prepares documentation in support of employee discipline.
  • Prepares, reviews and signs employee time cards and verifies contractor time records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: One year of permanent service as a Plant Utilities Engineer 1. MUST have taken and passed the specific job related Civil Service exam and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list. Valid New York State Drivers License.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as - $61,297.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

In addition, all full-time CSEA positions have an additional $3,400
