The Research Foundation for The State University of New York at Stony Brook Postdoctoral Associate in Stony Brook, New York

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)

  • Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Linguistics, or a closely related field degree in hand by January 1, 2025.
  • A record of computational and/or experimental research on human cognition and behavior must be shown.
  • A record of publishing research in peer-reviewed scientific journals and/or presenting at conferences.
  • Experience programming in R, Python, Julia, C++, or a similar programming language.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building and/or using agent-based models of human cognition and/or behavior.
  • Experience designing and running experiments with human participants.
  • Experience using Dallinger or other tools for running large-scale online experiments.
  • Experience developing and/or applying machine learning tools.
  • Experience mentoring or collaborating with undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Strong scientific writing skills.
  • Experience or interest in organizing workshops, public-facing science events, etc.
  • A demonstrated commitment to open science, team science, and to fostering an inclusive and equitable research environment.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator
Margaret Schedel in the Institute for Advanced Computational Science and the departments of Computer Science, Linguistics, and Music. The Postdoctoral Associate will also work closely with other members of the Human-Centered Computing Working Group in the Institute for Advanced Computational Science. The incumbent will conduct studies on human creativity and innovation using a combination of simulations and experiments with real human participants. The incumbent will independently and/or with colleagues conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University.

  • Within the predetermined research scope and methodology including human subject, build models and conduct research experiments on creativity.
  • Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related fields to analyze the collected data.
  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.
  • Active participation in the IACS community by attending and giving talks at seminars and workshops. Engage with students through mentorship and interdisciplinary discussions, fostering collaboration and innovation.
  • Other duties as assigned, which may include mentoring graduate students, attending journal club, and attending scientific conferences.

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Associate to join an interdisciplinary team at the Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) at Stony Brook University. The selected candidate will engage in groundbreaking research focused on the mechanisms of human creativity and innovation, exploring how creative ideas emerge, develop, and spread within different contexts and systems. This work will involve a unique combination of computational simulations (including agent-based models) and large-scale experiments with human participants. The project will investigate theoretical and empirical dimensions of creativity, bridging computational and experimental approaches to better understand how creative processes play out in different domains, particularly music and language.The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
