Stony Brook University Senior Network Engineer in Stony Brook, New York

Senior Network Engineer:Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of the Bachelor's Degree, a combination of directly related full-time experience working in IT and education totaling nine [9] years may be considered. Five [5] years of full-time experience working in IT. Experience in designing secure networks on-premise and in cloud environments with the use of firewalls and other security devices to secure data and end users. Experience with network tools (ie: RF/Wireless signal testers and network analyzers). Experience with performing updates to network infrastructure. Experience with managing DHCP, DNS, and AAA (ie. RADIUS) Services. Must have, keep, and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record that is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Additional years of full-time experience working in IT. Experience with cloud security engineering. Experience with virtual networks (ie. Azure or AWS). Experience with networks within Hyper-converged infrastructure. Experience with networks within Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. Experience with following/ updating documentation and network diagrams. Network related certification such as, but not limited to, Aruba Certified Mobility Associate, CCNA/CCNP, Network+. Experience with supervising or managing a project or services (projects, interns, students, or mentoring co-workers or peers). Familiarity with monitoring and troubleshooting tools such as, but not limited to, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor.Brief Description of Duties:
The incumbent's primary function is to work as a senior member of the networking team, reporting to the Manager of Network Services, to design, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain the network infrastructure that is deemed critical, thus ensuring the availability of the network. This includes but is not limited to, designing, deploying, and managing on-premise & cloud-based (e.g., AWS, Azure, Oracle, Google Cloud) network infrastructures. This role combines traditional network engineering skills with cloud expertise to ensure connectivity, performance, and security across public, private, and hybrid cloud systems. The Senior Network engineer will work closely with security and infrastructure teams to build scalable, resilient, and secure network solutions for on-premise and cloud environments. This position will contribute to the efforts of safeguarding the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the enterprise infrastructure and information assets across the University. The incumbent will be required to participate and lead network security-related work-groups to not only develop strategies but raise awareness in the community as well. The incumbent will also meet with manufacturers of the network equipment to discuss the unique requirements of the University and present engineering requests to meet the needs of the University. After-hours and weekend work are required when appropriate. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are essential for this role. The Senior Network Engineer needs to collaboratively approach resolving problems and provide excellent customer service to stakeholders.
Duties:
Network Security/Infrastructure Design & Implementation
: Evaluate and improve existing network infrastructure to meet the changing network security demands/challenges of the University. Developing both tactical (near-term/budget-friendly) and strategic (long-term) plans is required. In the performance of all job duties, at all times, be responsible for delivering optimal customer service, protecting institutional data and privacy, and the excellent delivery of solutions and services by following divisional and University policies, procedures, and processes.

Network Security/Infrastructure Change Management: Proactively manage the network infrastructure by performing maintenance updates and performing routine analysis of the health of the network infrastructure with minimal direction. Updates and changes are required to follow the change management process, which includes test plans, documentation, and management approval process.

Vulnerability and Threat Management: Performs analysis of network infrastructure to identify areas of weakness or areas of the network that have been exploited. Develop and execute remediation plans to address the vulnerability or threat.

Network Systems & Operations: In the event of a network disruption of service, the Sr. Network Engineer should work with the networking team and potentially take point to manage and resolve the issue effectively and efficiently.

Support all current and future Data Center enterprise network infrastructure architectures and cloud initiatives in accordance with industry standards and best practices. Support includes cross-training with the Network Engineering team.

Project Management: Working with the owners of the applications/network to gather requirements and identify the scope of work for approval. Project management involves designing, implementing and supporting a network infrastructure where the University's assets are operating 24 x 7 on the network without compromising the security and integrity of the network infrastructure.

Documentation & Communication: Document network diagrams and workflows for the network team. Collaborates with other IT to review, develop, testing, and implementation of security plans, products, and control techniques. Communicate with stakeholders as appropriate.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

SUNY implemented a hybrid telecommuting pilot program. This position has been approved to participate in the pilot, which allows for up to 5 remote days per pay period.
