Atlantic Health System Dietitian - Full Time in Summit, New Jersey

Position Summary:

Performs the clinical nutrition activities of the patient care areas to ensure optimal nutritional care and education of patients in accordance with established standards of care, compliance with The Joint Commission, state standards, and other regulatory requirements. Supports medical and nursing staff to optimize nutrition care through evidence-based practices. Participates in the efforts of department PI projects and assessment of clinical nutrition programs.

Lead Dietitian and the Manager, Clinical Dietary Services

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

  • Works with the interns to assist in their educational experience. Contributes to their performance assessment. Monitors their distribution of work and facilitates their interaction with the team. Assist with the onboarding of new team members.

  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminar, conferences, and professional affiliation. Maintains appropriate competencies.

  • Maintains standards of Food and Nutrition Services Department’s clinical programs and those set by hospital, the NJDOHSS and The Joint Commission. Maintains registration status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

  • Maintains accurate records to meet regulatory agency guidelines and assists in statistical analysis of data and actions plans for performance improvement initiatives.

  • Performs nutrition assessment and re-assessment. Assesses the nutrition status of patients on appropriate biochemical, anthropometric, physical and dietary data. Calculates nutrient needs (Calories, Protein, and Fluids) for patients on oral, enteral and parenteral nutrition. Recommends appropriate formulas to meet the metabolic needs and tolerance. Screens, assesses and provides follow-up care for patients in a timely manner according to established criteria outlined in clinical policies and procedures.

  • Performs nutrition counseling and education to determine patients and/or family members nutrition education needs Identifies cultural, religious, ethnic, age-specific, motivational and other barriers that may impact patient’s comprehension and compliance of diet. Provides individualized instruction for patients and their families in nutrition principles and dietary plans. Visits patients regularly to determine diet adherence, meal tolerance and patient satisfaction.

  • Evaluates appropriateness of diet prescription using subjective and objective patient data and monitors correct transmission of diet orders to dietary department. Consults with physicians and other health care professionals when developing nutrition care plan. Collaborates with Clinical Nutrition Manager, Lead Dietitian and department management team to complete other tasks deemed necessary for the proper functioning of the department. Participates in hospital committees relating to patient initiatives and care.

  • Participates in peer review and other audits. Participates in development of Clinical Performance Improvement plans. Participates in Journal Club, interdisciplinary initiative for PI, other quality control monitors such as Test Trays, Safety Audits, and Patient Satisfaction initiatives. Participates in Root Cause Analysis as needed.

  • Documents in the medical record according to policy and procedure criteria utilizing approved abbreviations. Documents appropriately as necessary on Interdisciplinary Care Plan and Education Record. Documentation is completed in a timely manner.

    Responsible for all other tasks as assigned

Required:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, Home Science or related field.

  2. Licensed with the State of New Jersey as a Registered Dietetic Technician or Registered Dietician or Dietary Manager Association or as applicable.

Preferred:

  1. Master's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, Home Science or related field.

  2. 2-3 year's experience in acute care clinical nutrition or relevant area.
