Amazon MTS Engineer, Manufacturing Technical Specialits (MTS) in Sunnyvale, California

Description

This position exposes you to a broad spectrum of materials characterization techniques for consumer electronics devices in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Learn about the requirements for a wide range of consumer electronic (CE) and other commercial applications while being exposed to research, development, and manufacturing of devices, and how they interrelate to lab measurements you provide.

This position requires a broad understanding of materials science and engineering principles; the ideal candidate will have had experience with some of the following:

  • Materials characterization and testing methods

  • Experience reporting experimental test data

  • Materials selection and materials-related considerations in a design

  • Basic statistical data analysis methods

Key job responsibilities

In this role, you will

  • Learn to use a range of physical, mechanical, and chemical characterization techniques to select the appropriate materials for a CE device

  • Perform test sample preparation and develop associated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for deployment at other sites and vendors.

  • Interpret experimental results and generate precise and detailed technical reports Apply materials science/engineering principles to solve important materials-related issues

  • Work cross-functionally from product design through manufacturing, including failure analysis

A day in the life

This role will be highly varied and not routine. You will learn to operate a wide range of analytical and characterization instruments in the lab, in support of most Amazon devices, while interacting with and learning from senior staff in your direct organization. Initial job responsibilities could include collecting data, interpreting the results, and, with assistance from senior team members, writing detailed or summary reports describing the implications for the project or product in question. This role also includes ensuring periodic calibration of existing apparatus and gauges, as well as on-boarding new tools and characterization methods. With some additional experience, this role is expected to evolve to include designing experiments and helping to solve significant materials science related issues in a data-driven manner, leading to interactions with and visibility to a wide range of other types of teams within Amazon hardware organization.

About the team

The Manufacturing Technical Specialist (MTS) team is part of the Quality and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering organization within Operations. It consists of subject-matter experts who partner closely with other cross-functional Amazon teams and suppliers. These collaborations create state-of-the-art solutions within the Hardware and Product Design space. The MTS team focuses on material selection, process optimization, and introducing unique capabilities and/or materials to enable mass production deployment across all Amazon devices.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or closely related technical field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of polymers/adhesives is desired

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $86,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
