Caris Life Sciences Genetic Counselor (Hybrid) in Tempe, Arizona

Position Summary

The Genetic Counselor will analyze and understand the clinical aspect of high complexity tests, as offered by Caris Life Sciences, to provide up-to-date clinically relevant review of molecular testing. The Genetic Counselor identifies and communicates clinically relevant secondary findings to ordering providers. This position works under the direction of the Director, Molecular Diagnostics and follows standard laboratory procedures and policies.

Job Responsibilities

  • Follow established policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.

  • Follow the laboratory procedures for test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

  • Perform test interpretation and screen test results for potential germline variants with clinical relevance (secondary findings); includes reviewing scientific literature and using industry-specific computer resources.

  • Consult with Molecular Genetics Team on cases as requested or needed. Includes participation in consensus conference regarding secondary findings.

  • Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies to ensure that clinical results are not reported until quality controls have been satisfactorily performed, document all quality control activities.

  • Communicate secondary findings to ordering providers and gather additional clinical information; assist client services with answering client questions.

  • Serve as a resource and collaborator for the Evidence Design Board, the Quality Assurance Program, Research & Development, Marketing, Client Services, and other Caris Life Sciences groups.

  • Promote and work to improve relationships with clinicians and the Molecular community.

  • May be asked to provide seminar/training for employee CEU requirements.

  • Assist, as needed, to perform other related duties and special projects as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an institution accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).

  • 3+ years of experience as a genetic counselor in a clinical and/or laboratory environment. Industry and oncology genetics experience is preferred.

  • Candidates must be able to work on Saturday and Sunday, as both days are part of the position’s five-day work schedule.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of Internet for business use.

  • Conditions of Employment: Individuals must successfully complete pre-employment process, which includes criminal background check, drug screening, and reference check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current board certification in genetic counseling from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC), or eligible.

  • Experience working with industry and oncology genetic testing/counseling.

  • Familiarity with key aspects of laboratory safety and quality control procedures and regulations; working knowledge of molecular diagnostic technologies.

  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

  • Ability to learn how to use internal software programs and industry-specific computer resources.

  • Requires a high degree of care and attention with strict adherence to defined clinical testing protocols.

  • Demonstrated skills and high level of attention to detail in technical data

  • Interpretation and ability to troubleshoot.

  • Proven ability to learn and collaborate with others in a complex, multi-functional and specialty environment.

Physical Demands

  • Must possess ability to sit, stand, and/or work at a computer for long periods of time.

  • Visual acuity and analytic skill to distinguish fine detail. Ability to pass a visual color discrimination test.

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.

Other

  • This position requires periodic travel and some evenings and/or holidays.
