Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Thornton Active Adult Center Nutrition Program; oversees operation of the program when the Kitchen Manager is not present.

WORK HOURS:

Monday through Friday - 7:00 am - 3:00 pm

This contract position is eligible for several of the City's benefits, which include:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Works collaboratively with the Kitchen Manager and staff to cultivate a positive and supportive team environment to accomplish annual goals, manage program growth, and continuously review and evaluate processes for improvement and to maximize efficiency.

Serves as a second-in-command role, allowing the Kitchen Manager to fulfill administrative duties as needed.

Provides excellent customer service to members of the Thornton Active Adult Center (TAAC). Leads by example. Acts in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Works with Kitchen staff to ensure the highest quality of food production and guest satisfaction.

Assists in leading team while cooking and preparing all meals for the TAAC nutritional and Soup To-Go programs in a close-knit environment with other staff. Uses some established recipes and some creativity that comes with a varying daily menu. Menu items change based on seasonal availability of fresh products.

Understands how to operate commercial kitchen equipment (ovens, stoves, grills, microwaves, fryers, etc.). Ensures correct temperature of appliances and food.

Maintains portion control for all foods served. Controls spoilage and waste. Responsible for the quality control and presentation of all foods served.

Assists with all aspects of food preparation. Maintains sanitary health practices around the preparation of food and safe handling of food prior to reaching our guests. Follows safe and proper food storage and rotation practices (i.e. first in/first out). Follows Adam's County food safety practices and protocol.

Has general knowledge of daily menus and the ability to execute the menu in the Kitchen Manager’s absence. Needs to have working confidence to take charge and lead kitchen staff in Kitchen Manager’s absence. Keeps and maintains the kitchen in a safe and organized way.

Assists in daily cleaning of the dishes, kitchen, and eating areas after lunch service and monthly deep cleanings consistent with State of Colorado Commercial Kitchen Licensing guidelines. Keeps kitchen including equipment, floors, food prep areas, counters, stoves, ovens, coolers, and freezers clean.

Ensures that deliveries are received, stocked, and rotated in the kitchen. Assists with daily and weekly orders.

Reports hazards and maintenance needs for the kitchen to the appropriate personnel.

Assists with menu and recipe development; implements new menu items and creates recipes to standardize the nutrition program. May assist with creation of special menus and presentations to highlight skills of kitchen team.

Must be available to generally work a schedule within the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Exact shift time may vary. Also, must be able to work some nights and weekend for special events including but not limited to HarvestFest Pancake Breakfast and Breakfast with Santa.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or GED plus one year of previous food service experience, including prior experience in food preparation preferred. Management or Lead Cook experience preferred. Additional food service and preparation training is desired. Food safety training preferred but not required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

Food Safety Certification (Manager) is required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.

May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.

Knowledge of basic food preparation and food arrangement.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of sanitary food production.

Knowledge of basic kitchen equipment/appliances.

Knowledge of general nutritional value of foods.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective customer service.

Knowledge of public health regulations.

Ability to plan and prepare quality foods for small to large groups of people in an efficient manner.

Ability to work some evenings and weekends, or a flexible schedule if needed.

Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to use standard equipment and food processing equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.

Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.

Ability to read, interpret, understand and comply with instructions and kitchen safety procedures and standards.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and make repetitive motions. This position is mostly medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned; is subject to noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
