Job Description – Responsibilities

Amgen’s Global Development Organization shapes the strategy and pipeline through insights into disease, data and drug development science. The organization includes capabilities and expertise across Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, Biostatistics, Observational Research and Clinical Pharmacology led by VPs that make up the Global Development Senior Leadership team (SLT). The common organizational pursuit of excellence and innovation in study design, analytic methods and operational efficiency enable us to improve the health and lives of patients with greater speed and predictability. The Strategic Planning & Operations (SP&O) Director will report to the Global Development Strategy Executive Director. This role will partner with the Global Development SVP and Strategy Executive Director to lead goal setting, implementation of organizational plans, engagement and communication plans, day-to-day business operations, preparation of executive dashboards, and presentations to internal and external stakeholders. The Global Development SP&O Director is key in driving alignment across R&D strategies, portfolio priorities, organizational objectives, budget and resourcing. Key responsibilities of this position will include the following:

  • In partnership with the Global Development SVP, lead and effectively organize high functioning meetings and orchestrate town halls, events and presentations to drive engagement and sense of purpose that align with the organization’s goals

  • Collaborate with Human Resources, Finance and Commercialization and other business partners to implement organizational priorities or define options and actions to support prioritization decisions

  • Serve as a key liaison between Global Development SVP, Global Development SLT and other key stakeholders to drive alignment on priorities, communicate decisions and progress actions

  • Gather, analyze, and synthesize cross-functional information across a variety of sources to maintain knowledge of Global Development model, initiatives and portfolio assets to identify hot spots for SLT discussion and prepare executive status updates

  • Own the end-to-end management of resources and budget tracking and approval processes across Global Development and that enable effective summarization of drivers, trends and metrics

  • Manage, own and drive effectiveness of technical governance committee meeting processes that drive cross functional alignment and support portfolio progression

  • Mentor, manage and develop a successful team that deliver on Global Development Therapeutic Areas business operations and oversee administrative support strategies for Global Development

  • Represent Global Development and provide subject matter expertise to cross-functional initiatives and provide insights to inform initiative objectives and decisions

  • Contribute to high-impact cross-functional/functional initiatives of strategic importance to the business and implement any other emerging tasks requested by the Global Development SVP

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 4 years experience in biopharma setting OR

  • Master's degree and 7 years experience in biopharma setting OR

  • Bachelor's degree and 9 years experience in biopharma setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA, PhD, PharmD, or Master’s Degree with 10 years work experience in life sciences or biopharmaceutical industry, preferably with 4 years experience in R&D

  • Demonstrated leader who has experience leading cross-functional teams and complex programs related to the biopharmaceutical industry

  • Demonstrated expertise in redefining complex information into clear and concise messages for diverse audiences throughout the organization

  • Excellent conceptual problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to bring structure to vaguely defined problems, pragmatically scope problem solving approach, and manage implement

  • Proficiency in data analysis to identify trends, present actionable insights and define key performance indicators relevant to business objectives

  • Excellent cross-functional presentation skills and a decisive yet affiliative leadership style to get results while maintaining relationships

  • Strong influencing skills with a demonstrated ability to influence different styles and individuals at multiple levels in organization

  • Demonstrated organization management experience including developing and mentoring staff

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
