Process Development Associate Scientist - Cellular Sciences / Biosafety Development

In this vital role you will join our Biosafety Development (BSD) group in Thousand Oaks Cellular Sciences Department.

The Associate Scientist will support ensuring patient safety by performing molecular assays and viral clearance assessment studies for Amgen’s pharmaceutical products. Also, they will partake in technology development for detection and identification of adventitious agents of any type.

Primary focus will be on model virus production via characterized cell lines and use of these model viruses to perform GMP Viral Clearance studies supporting IND and MA filings to the FDA. Test articles are generated with protein purification processes using AKTA Unicorn HPLC methods involving all modes of chromatography (e.g. affinity, ion exchange, hydrophobic, mixed mode) Assays performed for the detection of viruses include cell-based assays and/or molecular techniques.

Responsibilities may include the following:

  • Maintenance of mammalian cell lines, infection of cells with viruses and detection using cell-based or molecular methods (e.g., qPCR, NGS).

  • Leading and executing GMP Viral Clearance studies to support IND and MA filings to the FDA.

  • Utilizing molecular assays for the detection of other adventitious agents, including mycoplasma, bacteria, or fungus.

  • Applying chromatography techniques for the purification or removal of viruses.

  • Molecular assay method development and qualification.

  • Training other employees.

  • Managing materials and supply inventory.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of Scientific experience OR

  • Master’s degree and 1 year of Scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands on experience with maintenance of cell culture lines.

  • Hands on experience with molecular biology techniques including qPCR; method development experience a plus.

  • Hands on experience with purification systems, including but not limited to AKTA Chromatography system.

  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills and a desire to learn new scientific concepts.

  • Work as a member of a small team to follow and develop methods.

  • Demonstrate good planning and project execution skills.

  • Clearly and concisely interpret and present data.

  • Ability to understand, apply and evaluate cell biology, virology and mathematical principles.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
