Shire Senior Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Professional in Thousand Oaks, California
To develop, implement and administer all applicable environmental, health, safety (EHS) and Industrial Hygiene (IH) policies and programs. Assist in compliance with all federal, state and local environmental, health and safety (EHS) regulations. Provides technical support to EHS division staff, and manufacturing. Be a strong leader in the EHS department.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Supervise the day to day production, scheduling, staffing, material management, compliance, training, and auditing activities for area of responsibility.
Assist in the overall development, evaluation, administration and implementation of EHS policies and programs.
Perform or support technical reviews, investigation and process improvement projects.
Provide input into integration and validation of new equipment and process as it related to safety.
Provide non-routine problem solving for engineering, R&D and manufacturing groups.
Through collaboration with EHS Manager, assist in the management of site activities, which impact areas of EHS regulatory compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
Review, approve, and manage documentation for EHS related policies and procedures.
Interface with other departments to help resolve issues related to equipment, process and compliance including facility support departments and external vendors.
Lead/participate in technical reviews, investigation and process improvement projects in order to meet objectives.
Assess impact of new regulatory guidelines on current practice, initiate document change proposals, prepare/review protocols to justify process changes, assist with training and auditing as appropriate.
Conduct EHS reviews of new equipment, systems and/or procedures.
Participate in Internal or external audits as SME for department.
Provide management assistance in maintaining ISO 14000 and OHSAS 18000 certified status and setting goals and targets for all EHS programs having significant impact.
Conduct/participate in corporate/division/facility and regulated EHS audits.
Prepare and/or assist with composing agency (e.g. EPA, OSHA), corporate and divisional reports.
Provide required, specialized training to Baxalta employees.
Member of Emergency Response Team for hazardous materials spills which requires 24-hour on call status.
Develop and manage performance of direct reports
May perform other duties as assigned.
The individual should be able to identify EHS non-compliance and recommend or implement solutions.
Must have a working knowledge of Federal and CA state EHS regulations.
Advanced knowledge of occupational health & safety programs.
Knowledge of basic laboratory and pharmaceutical operations and equipment.
Knowledge of Utility Systems and how they impact site operations. Understands the flow and design/interdependency of manufacturing support departments.
Basic professional writing skills and ability to prepare and write technical reports.
Basic supervisory and leadership skills.
Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced manufacturing plant setting.
Must be able to read and follow detailed written instructions.
Must be able to read, write, and converse in English.
Must be able to navigate, conduct searches, and fill on line forms on a computer for the purposes of training, performance management, and self-service applications.
Must have the ability to navigate electronic mail systems and intranet for communication purposes.
Must possess advanced word processing & spreadsheet skills.
Must have excellent communication (verbal & written) and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team environment.
Incumbent must be proficient in a variety of mathematical disciplines and be able to work with both the metric and USA standards of measurement.

Education and/or Experience
Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial hygiene, etc.) or other related Environmental, Health and Safety field plus 5-10 years of EHS experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing preferred.
MS degree in Environmental, Health and Safety or Safety Engineering, Technology or Management (5-7 years of advanced experience may be substituted). Minimum of 2-4 years of leadership experience.
Must be able to work in controlled or clean room environments requiring special gowning.
Will be required to follow gowning requirements and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. No make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in these work environments.
May work in a cold, wet environment.
May be exposed to dust, gases, and fumes.
May work around moving equipment and machinery.
May climb up and onto equipment for inspection.
May be working in a loud area that requires hearing protection and other protective equipment to be worn.
May work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, and buffers that may require respiratory protection.
May be required to work in a confined area as defined by the Environmental, Health, & Safety dept.
Possible exposure to cool/hot storage conditions.
Will have interaction with other people.
Pace may be fast and job completion demands may be high.
May be required to travel for business reasons, e.g. training and meetings .
May be required to work or be assigned to a different shift as needed.
Must be able to work more than 8+ hours a day or 40+ hours a workweek as required.
This position requires shift, weekend and holiday work.
The overall physical exertion of this position is medium work.
May be required occasionally to lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds.
May be required to climb occasionally ladders or stairwells in work campus
May be required to crawl rarely when completing the following job duty: safety inspection of equipment
May be required to use hand / finger feel constantly when completing the following job duty: use of computer applications and occasionally handle production equipment
May be required movement of head /neck occasionally when completing the following job duty: use of computer applications with business documents and occasionally handle production equipment
May be required to grip and grasp occasionally when completing the following job duty: handling testing equipment, materials, supplies and filing/storage cabinets
May be required to frequently stand for job duties including but not limited to overseeing safety or inspection activities
May be required to frequently walk for job duties including but not limited to overseeing safety or inspection activities
May be required to drive for job duties including but not limited to attending offsite meetings/trainings.
May be required to reach overhead for job duties including but not limited to handling materials/files/supplies.
May be required to frequently visually inspect for job duties including but not limited to overseeing inspection or testing activities, reviewing equipment/materials.
