About this role

Alternative Specialists Team (AST) helps BlackRock’s clients gain access to the investment teams, resources and strategies within our alternatives strategies platform, and is tasked to deliver solutions for our clients. AST has deep knowledge of particular product sets to drive specialist to specialist conversations. AST works in partnership with our relationship managers (RMs) and sales coverage within the Client Business Group to maximise our engagement with our clients in respect of our Alternatives capabilities. By ensuring that we have high caliber specialists, AST can maximize our bandwidth and depth of client relationship.

Job Purpose/Background:

Reporting to the Head of Japan AST, the role will be responsible for developing new business with institutional and retail clients in Japan supporting the continuing growth of assets under management of BlackRock’s alternative strategies. The role’s primary focus is on illiquid and liquid alternative strategies. As at December 31 2023, BlackRock managed US$329bn of Alternatives assets, structured as commingled vehicles, multi-manager programs and customized separate accounts. BlackRock’s Alternatives platform includes Infrastructure, Private Equity, Private Credit, Real Estate, Hedge Funds and Alternative Solutions, with offerings across each of the Americas, EMEA and Asia Pacific regions as well as the breadth of the risk-return spectrum.

AST has expert knowledge across private markets, both equity and debt/credit, and work extensively on bespoke solutions for our clients. In addition, all members of AST are knowledgeable across the broader BlackRock’s alternative platform and can represent these capabilities to internal and external stakeholders.

BlackRock’s alternative platform is a fast growing business unit within BlackRock offering institutional and retail clients access to liquid, illiquid solutions, providing investments from a broad and deep suite of products and investment partnership opportunities. Since 2011 BlackRock has raised significant funds across Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. This position offers the opportunity to join one of the world’s leading asset management firms at a time of significant investment in, and focus on, Alternatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Product Strategists teams (both globally and domestically), and Japanese Client Businesses Group to design and implement a result orientated sales strategy for clients and prospects

  • Work with the Client Businesses Group to develop education and sales activity with prospects currently not investing in Alternatives

  • Work with Global Consultant Relations to deepen field consultant and analyst relationships

  • Support fundraising projects through all stages, including prospect identification, initial engagements, due diligence management, and documentation, by working closely with product strategists (globally/domestically) and client businesses

  • Facilitate direct client engagement from global product strategists and portfolio managers to advance fundraising deals

  • Track fundraising progress in each client segment, identify issues, and deliver solutions to advance fundraising deals

  • Ensure participation in large profitable RFPs and source non-competitive opportunities

  • Explore further business opportunities which covers the broader BlackRock’s alternative platform

  • Cultivating an awareness of client specific investment and operational priorities and sensitivities

  • Regularly distribute articles and reports about BlackRock’s alternative capabilities to raise awareness of BlackRock’s alternative platform among prospects and clients

  • Create solution-oriented presentation materials

  • Be familiar with internal systems and processes

  • Become a student of the markets

  • Proactively think about client strategy and share ideas with lead RMs

Skills/Qualifications:

  • At least 3 - 5 years relevant financial services experience with fluency in both Alternatives products and investments characteristics, including substantial experience in Alternatives businesses inclusive of how portfolios are constructed and how the asset positions are described in fundraising activities

  • Demonstrates a real passion for the Alternatives asset class

  • Ability to demonstrate clear awareness of key issues in the Alternatives market affecting institutional investors from both an investment, service and regulatory perspective

  • Capacity to move fluently between clients, relationship managers and portfolio managers to provide value added perspective and deliverables

  • Excellent Teamwork mind-set and thoughtful communication skills

  • Proven analytical and critical thinking skills

  • Experience in contributing to quality client service

  • High quality and ability to complete multi-task

  • Knowledge of financial markets and asset management instruments

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Japanese

  • Acts with integrity and with the desire to do the right thing for clients

  • Considerate of colleagues. Ability to build internal network

  • Positive mindset and willing to take constructive feedback

  • Flexibility to embrace and lead change, adapt and innovate

  • Strong intellectual ability and interpersonal skills to establish his/her credibility with the senior leaders throughout the Firm and throughout the institutional investor community

  • Ability to Lead by example – high ethical standards and strong work ethic

  • MBA, CFA or CAIA preferred
