Summary Works as a journeyman plumber doing installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of interior and exterior water, air, gas, and sewer lines. Maintain and repair laundry, dietetic and other equipment. To accomplish work, must measure, cut threads, bend, ream, solder and insulate all types of pipe and fittings. Responsible to see that work performed is acceptable to the VA, and to follow proper safety precautions and established policies and procedure. Responsibilities Major Duties: - Installation, repair, and inspection of steam distribution and return lines, both interior and exterior, up to 8 inches in diameter and 110 pounds pressure. - Works on steam heated laundry and Kitchen equipment. Condensate, vacuum and return pumps, unit heaters, radiators, traps, reducing stations, etc. - Must be able to do arc and acetylene welding, and use other tools common to the trade. - Establish and maintain documentation files for all systems, This documentation includes drawings, programs, sequences of operation, preventive maintenance records and machinery listing records. - Acts as a technical adviser regarding the operation, effectiveness, maintainability, serviceability, and utilities, space, and environmental requirement of equipment, including interrelationships with other equipment and the physical plant. - Assists in preparing and conducting basic training for hospital personnel in proper and safe use of plumbing devices. Participates in the formulation of comprehensive, preventive maintenance schedules and procedural guides for equipment and plumbing systems. - Performs preventive maintenance inspections when assigned on all types of equipment. - Public relations is an important part of a successful maintenance program. Work assignment will require teamwork and personnel contact with facility staff, patients, and members of the public. A proper appearance, positive attitude, and tactful approach are essential in order to obtain the cooperation needed to meet facility and department goals. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/20/2024. Basic - Individual Occupational Requirement: Your experience must show, but is not limited to experience and knowledge of how various supply, disposal, and utility systems and equipment, such as water and gas systems, lavatories, and water closets are installed and operate; Ability to plan and lay out the installation and modification of various systems and equipment, for example, the routing, openings, slant, and level of gas and water lines, and the location and arrangement of lavatories and sinks; Ability to interpret and apply building plans and blueprints, use shop mathematics, and lay out such things as angles, arcs, and circles; Skill in the use of any of the accepted trade methods and techniques, such as wiping, seating equipment, and installing any combinations of couplings, unions, and joints needed for the proper operation of the systems; Skill in the use of tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, dividers, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps, ad lead pots. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Heavy exertion may be required during installation of steam piping and plumbing. May be required to work overhead and on ladders for long periods of time. Must be flexible and adaptable because of the variety of jobs that must be accomplished and because of the many different conditions and places in which work is done. Work Environment: Works on wards where patients are in a position to pick-up tools or supplies that may be used and must follow proper safety precautions to prevent this. Work must be accomplished in such a manner that it will not result in bodily injury to patients and employees from steam or overheated hot water. Must work in underground tunnels, attics, basements, closets, boiler plant, laundry, and other areas. Work on some occasions is under extremely high temperatures and uses heavy tools and equipment in close quarters. Also works in sewer manholes and ditches when repairing or laying new pipe.
