Department Overview:

The Chief Accountant's Department is responsible for TD Bank Group's consolidated financial statements and selected regulatory filings for Canadian subsidiaries. The Chief Accountant's Department ensures that all these filings are accurate, timely and compliant with the accounting and regulatory requirements set by different governing bodies.

The Financial Reporting Controls Team (FRC) within the Chief Accountant's Department supports the Chief Accountant & Controller in fulfilling their controllership mandate, is responsible for setting policies governing financial reporting and providing oversight on compliance to these policies. The objective of these policies is to control financial reporting risks across the organization to promote accuracy of financial reporting. The FRC Team is also responsible for providing guidance and oversight on financial reporting related controls at both the consolidated Bank level and significant subsidiaries level.

As a Senior Group Manager, Specialized Finance, Financial Reporting Controls, you will be responsible for providing strategic guidance and oversight on financial reporting controls. You will develop partnerships with cross-segment teams across the Bank to provide expert advice on financial reporting governance policies and control frameworks, identifying opportunities to improve processes and controls, and overseeing the implementation of changes.

In this role you will:

  • Strengthen the Bank's overall internal control environment and policies related to governance of financial reporting

  • Act as a subject matter expert on financial reporting controls, providing timely advice to senior management, business partners and stakeholders on complex financial reporting risks and controls, including preparing assessments on risks and controls and any gaps requiring remediation

  • Provide expert advice on policy requirements and implementation considerations for Finance transformations

  • Develop reporting leveraging data and analytics to effectively monitor the compliance with financial reporting policies

  • Ensure stakeholders are trained on policy and guideline requirements, and provide oversight and monitoring over compliance to policies and guidelines

  • Partner with other lines of defense to oversee the design, monitoring and assessment of compliance to policies

  • Develop and manage working relationships with key business partners and stakeholder groups, both internally (e.g. Segment Finance, Finance Operations, Corporate Data & Analytics, Governance and Control, and Internal Audit) and externally (auditors)

  • Oversee and monitor internal controls performed within the FRC Team

  • Be the Finance advocate and champion of financial controls to drive continuous improvement within the Bank – streamline, standardize, liaise with Internal Audit, Segment Finance

  • Build for the future and provide people leadership. Develop, coach, and train a team of professionals to accomplish positive outcomes and strengthen financial controls

Job Requirements:

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA/CPA)

  • University degree in business or other relevant fields

  • 10+ years experience in an accounting/finance/audit role with internal controls or financial controls experience

  • Financial industry experience would be considered a strong asset

  • Public accounting firm experience would be considered a strong asset

  • Demonstrated ability to build effective and collaborative working relationships with cross-functional teams and business partners

  • Demonstrated ability to think conceptually and formulate policy decisions commensurate with the risks involved. Ability to consider practical application of policies and standards given business related specifics

  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal), with the ability to articulate complex subject matters simply and clearly

  • Good understanding of financial statement assertions and their practical application in controls

  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to synthesize data, extract meaning and utilize relevant information to form a view on actual, potential risks and opportunities

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to anticipate issues, identify opportunities and recommend solutions

  • Given high level objectives, ability to navigate ambiguity and formulate/define a plan and ability to drive execution

  • People management experience and/or proven leadership with the ability to coach and guide a team

  • Demonstrated track record of leading teams in a fast pace, time sensitive and complex environment

  • Ability to make decisions based on a combination of data and professional judgment
