WSP USA Senior Project Manager, Rail & Transit (Freight Rail) in Toronto, Ontario

The Opportunity:

Senior Project Manager, Rail & Transit (Freight Rail) for our team in Western Canada, residing in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg or our Toronto office. Reporting to the Director, Rail & Transit, you will be responsible for managing multi-disciplinary teams delivering complex projects on time, within budget and with quality results. The Senior Project Manager will plan, organize, monitor, and oversee one or more projects. Projects may include policy reviews, research, operational reviews, network planning, design, and construction administration. WSP is specifically looking for those with focus on Freight Rail project leadership experience.

What you can expect to do here:

  • Manage multi-disciplinary project teams of, Engineers, Planners, Designers, Inspectors, and other staff as required to deliver high-quality project management results, meeting client requirements;

  • Lead concurrent projects consisting of small, medium and/ or large multi-disciplinary projects, with available resourcing while prioritizing project deliverables;

  • Prepare project work plans and schedules, and obtain management/client approval;

  • Maintain regular communication with clients regarding project status and project quality, and proactively resolve issues and mitigating risks;

  • Manage relationships with project stakeholders, including internal and external clients and vendors, regulatory authorities and technical agencies, and the public. This involves keeping the stakeholders informed of progress and issues in order to manage expectations on all project requirements and deliverables, and meet the project schedule;

  • Proactively track, analyze and report on actual performance against the plan, and prepare cost and schedule reporting, both for clients and as part of internal reporting processes. Address change management matters promptly and professionally with clients and internal departments;

  • Prepare and Lead Project Proposals; with input from others, to compile a comprehensive and realistic scope of work and fees, that meet project customer requirements and seek internal management approvals to submit the proposal.

  • Participate in Business Development opportunities, such as trade shows, client presentations, and webinars that highlight WSP’s service offerings and increase WSP’s profile

  • Lead project teams in a proactive and positive manner that meet WSP’s guiding principles to mentor, assist, encourage, and motivate teams fostering an environment focused on achievement, and empowerment.

  • Collaborate with accountants and billing and collection, to ensure client invoicing is on time, and is collected as per Terms and Conditions. Proactively resolve any disputes with clients to ensure mutually beneficial results, while maintaining positive client relationships.

What you’ll bring to WSP:

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • A University Degree in Engineering or Technical Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience;

  • 10+ years of experience in Project or Program Management for design or construction of linear transportation infrastructure. Experience on large, complex Freight Rail Engineering and Construction Projects is preferred;

  • Experience with CN, CPKC, VIA Rail, Short LIne Railways, Industrial, Agricultural and Mining clients would be an asset;

  • Is a licensed Professional Engineer in Canada, is an asset;

  • Project Management Professional certification (i.e. PMP) is an asset.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams of project professionals; concurrently managing issues, scope and quality while bringing projects to successful completion within the cost and time requirements. Experience within an engineering consulting environment is preferred;

  • Experience with freight railway infrastructure, including facilities, and associated infrastructure.

  • Familiarity with commonly used project delivery models;

  • Strong business development and client management skills, including sound understanding of contract law, scheduling techniques, and budget development;

  • Experience in project planning, risk management, cost management and schedule management, and methods of analyzing and reporting project performance on financial and other KPIs; and

  • Proficiency with computer office productivity (i.e. MS Office) and project management software tools.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including experience making presentations to senior management, elected officials, and the public;

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; the ability to work well with people from many different disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience; competence in clear, concise and tactful communication with senior management, clients, peers and staff;

  • Networking skills including the ability to establish a network within WSP;

  • Strategic, conceptual analytical thinking and decision-making skills;

  • Negotiating skills within a context of political sensitivity and conflicting interests;

  • Adaptability and flexibility including the ability to manage deadline pressure, ambiguity, and change.
