Interstate 35 Community School District Evening Custodian in Truro, Iowa

The Interstate 35 Community School is seeking a candidate to join our highly effective custodial team. We have an opening for a full time evening custodian. We encourage all candidates to please apply through IowaWorks and include: a letter of application and letters of recommendation. The position will be open until filled. EOE/AA

This is a year-round position, evening hours during the school year and daytime hours in the summer. Requirements include general cleaning and maintenance. .

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Demonstrated aptitude for successful fulfillment of assigned performance responsibilities.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of Chemical Right To Know Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Classrooms:

  1. Dust mop or vacuum floors. Use clean dust mop and light spray of mop treatment. Move student desks and easily moved furniture to sweep. Get all possible areas.
  2. Clean desktops when needed. Use cleaning solution and dry rag.
  3. Dust accessible areas including administrative offices. Use feather duster or furniture polish and rag.
  4. Clean chalkboards using appropriate cleaners on chalkboards. Wash out chalk tray weekly and clean erasers weekly.
  5. Empty all trash containers and empty pencil sharpeners. Clean windows in doors of classrooms where applicable.

Hallways:

  1. Dust mop or vacuum floors using a clean dust mop and light spray of mop treatment on dust mop.
  2. Remove graffiti from lockers and walls, scrape gum off floor, dust ledges and locker tops, clean glass in hall doors and dividers.

Locker Rooms and Restrooms:

  1. Clean stools, urinals and sinks thoroughly with proper disinfectant and bowl cleaner daily.
  2. Clean mirrors with glass cleaner.
  3. Remove graffiti from walls and stalls.
  4. Wet mop floors and shower floors weekly using proper disinfectant cleaner.
  5. Fill paper and hand soap dispensers.
  6. Empty all trash containers.

Gymnasiums:

  1. Sweep floors using a clean dust mop and light spray of mop treatment on dust mop plus weekly use power scrubber to clean gym floors.
  2. Remove graffiti from walls, benches, etc.
  3. Clean glass in doors and windows and other areas that collect dust.

Wrestling areas:

  1. Sweep mats using a dry dust mop and pick up trash.
  2. Wet mop mats using proper germicidal disinfectant.

Weight room:

  1. Pick up trash and sweep matting with bristle broom.
  2. Sweep areas that collect dust.

Lobby and concession areas:

  1. Sweep, clean and dust mop with light spray of mop treatment on mop.
  2. Wet mop with general purpose floor cleaner and empty all trash containers.

All carpeted areas:

  1. Pick up large pieces of trash and vacuum thoroughly.
  2. Remove gum using gum remover and use carpet cleaner and rag on stains.

Teachers, secretaries, and administrators desks:

  1. Clean around things on desks as much as possible without disturbing anything. Stay out of desks and leave all papers alone.
  2. Empty wastebaskets.

Plants:

  1. Clean under them, move to dust if necessary.
  2. Watering is responsibility of owner unless custodian is especially asked to water them.

Lunch Areas:

  1. Set up tables and chairs before lunch and sweep after lunch is over.
  2. Damp mop spills with general-purpose floor cleaner.

Special Events and Activities:

  1. During sporting events custodians are responsible for: unlocking doors; setting up, dismantling and storage of ticket tables and chairs; raising an lowering basketball backboards; damp mop spills on gym floors before game; clean all areas properly after activity; locking and securing school after event; turn on all lights in area used and turning them off when activity is over; sweep bleachers after event is over; pick up and clean spills in commons during event; and empty all trash containers.

Summer Cleaning:

  1. All classroom furniture will be washed and removed from room if possible with all light fixtures, heat registers, glass and walls, etc. cleaned and washed.
  2. Floors will be stripped and scrubbed yearly.
  3. Floors will have five equal coats of wax yearly if applicable.
  4. Everything will be returned to the room and put in its proper place.

Hallways:

  1. All lockers will be scrubbed inside and out removing all graffiti with all glass (if applicable) cleaned properly.
  2. All floors and walls will be scrubbed and washed yearly.
  3. All floors will be stripped on a rotation basis yearly with floors receiving five new coats of wax each year if applicable.

Carpeting:

  1. Carpets will be cleaned (all gum and stains removed, if possible) and shampooed yearly.

Gym Floors:

  1. Gym floors stripped yearly with sealed and finished coat as needed with finished floors curing five full days.

Maintenance Responsibilities:

  1. Routines such as: changing light bulbs; repairing pencil sharpeners; tightening nuts and screws; fixing simple water leaks; taping broken windows; replacing broken light switch and socket covers; etc.; will be repaired whenever possible, in house.
  2. Repair and maintenance of desks and chairs if possible.
  3. Self starter, showing initiative to do those things you are capable of.
  4. Report all major problems to Director of Building and Grounds, who will then determine repairs.

Miscellaneous Responsibilities:

  1. Any other duties as may be directed by the administration or the Director of Building and Grounds.
  2. Assist maintenance supervisor/director in planning and participating in summer work for their building.
