JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Engineering Support Specialist will be an integral part of our Onsemi Silicon Carbide Crystal Center (SiC3) within Penn State’s Materials Research Institute (MRI). The position is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations and ensuring the smooth functioning of experimental processes. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities of this position include the following:

  • Assist in the setup, operation, and maintenance of silicon carbide synthesis equipment and instrumentation, including furnaces, CNC grinders, wire saws, wafer polishing and grinding, RO water filtration, and gas handling systems.

  • Prepare precursor materials and grinding/polishing slurries according to established protocols, ensuring accurate measurements and adherence to safety guidelines.

  • Perform comprehensive characterization of synthesized silicon carbide samples using techniques such as photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and analyze characterization data to assess the quality, purity, and structural properties of silicon carbide samples, documenting findings in detailed reports.

  • Collaborate closely with research teams to troubleshoot experimental issues, propose innovative solutions, and contribute to the advancement of silicon carbide synthesis techniques.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation, ensuring proper calibration, cleanliness, and functionality for consistent and reliable experimental outcomes.

  • Adhere to strict safety protocols and procedures in the handling, storage, and disposal of materials and chemicals, promoting a safe working environment for all staff members.

  • Responsible for process documentation. May assist in the preparation of research proposals, technical presentations, and scholarly publications related to silicon carbide synthesis and its applications.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree in a technical discipline, with a minimum 4+ years of experience (preferably in emiconductor synthesis, characterization, or processing, or related field) or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor's degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, or related field is preferred.

  • Proficiency in the use of various characterization techniques and instruments, such as photoluminescence, XRD, SEM, and EDS.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, and to document and report experimental results accurately and clearly.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

  • Ability to handle and work with hazardous materials and chemicals, following proper safety protocols and procedures.

This is a term position, funded for one year, with a good possibility of renewal.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$56,200.00 - $81,500.00
