JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Information Technology (IT) organization in the College of the Liberal Arts (https://la.psu.edu/) at Penn State is seeking a Research Computing Software Engineer to work directly with our research faculty to develop, modify , and support various custom research applications.

This role is great for individuals looking for variety in their next career move and to utilize and expand upon their breadth of knowledge of technical skills.

The Research Computing Software Engineer will work with various programming languages, application frameworks, and data storage systems – the ones being used at a given time will depend upon the research faculty and applications being supported.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Work with stakeholders to understand research requirements and identify best-fit solutions

  • Develop full-stack, secure and accessible web applications using best practices

  • Create, configure, and modify web application settings and server or cloud resources to support secure, research-oriented web applications

  • Investigate and resolve research teams’ incidents and requests with application enhancements

  • Use modern development best practices to help ensure systems meet security and accessibility requirements

  • Contribute to system architecture and DevOps planning through documenting development practices, tools, and system designs for operation continuity  

  • Create, update, and manage application databases while ensuring data integrity or creating Ad Hoc database queries for stakeholders

  • Test, debug, and document developed application resources

    The Research Computing Software Engineer will receive support from their supervisor, the Manager of Application Development, to learn any new frameworks, programming languages, and software systems needed for this role.

    Education and Experience: This position will be filled at the level of Intermediate Professional which requires a minimum of a Bachelors Degree and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience .

    Applicants must have direct experience working with stakeholders, preferably in a research capacity . Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential to this role.

    Additional qualifications include:

  • Experience with server-based application development languages 

  • Understanding of database development tools (Transactional SQL, Microsoft SQL Server or PostgreSQL)  

  • Understanding of modern web authentication and security

    Experience working in an IT-related role in academia or a research setting is preferred.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$76,700.00 - $115,100.00
