The National Synchrotron Light Source is a state-of-the-art, medium-energy (3-billion-electron-volt, or GeV) electron storage ring that produces x-rays up to 10,000 times brighter than the NSLS. The mission of the National Synchrotron Light Source is to provide extremely bright x-rays for basic and applied research in biology and medicine, materials and chemical sciences, geosciences and environmental sciences, and nanoscience. To support this program, the NSLS-II must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate and focus electron and X-ray beams. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the NSLSII scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The NSLS-II supports an international user community of over 2,200 researchers from 400 universities. The NSLS-II performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

NSLS-II Vacuum Group has an opening for a Mechanical Engineering position. Reporting to the Vacuum Group Leader, the candidate will perform Engineering duties for the maintenance, upgrade, and testing of vacuum sub-systems in support of NSLS-II accelerator operations. This position will require close interaction with technicians, engineers and scientific staff. The primary task will be to support operations of existing vacuum systems throughout the accelerator complex, providing engineering design support for the continued expansion of the facility, engineering projects for other departments and institutions and development of next generation vacuum systems critical to the continued success and future of NSLSII. The position will require ability to model and design fluently in the 3D environment as well as utilize advanced FEA engineering tools. Duties will include working with designers to release drawings, overseeing fabrication and procurement of parts and components.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop engineering solutions to support ongoing technical projects
  • Design advanced mechanical systems using CAD tools, and produce drawings
  • Provide high-level technical service to analyze and troubleshoot complex systems
  • Prepare job orders, requisitions, cost estimates
  • Lead coordination efforts with technical staff
  • Plan resources and develop schedules for system installations
  • Maintain a safe and respectful workplace environment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree in mechanical engineering or related field
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (Autodesk Inventor)
  • Experience with ANSYS workbench simulation software
  • Proficient computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power-point)
  • Ability to work with hand tools in a safe and effective manner
  • Demonstrated communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people including engineers and scientific personnel
  • Detail oriented and capable of following strict policies and procedures to ensure hardware and personal protection

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum three (3) years progressively responsible related work experience
  • Machine fabrication experience (Drill/Lathe/Mill, etc.)
  • Basic assembly and metrology skills
  • Experience with UHV (Ultra-high Vacuum) systems including pumping systems and leak checking equipment
  • Knowledge of material properties for use in UHV systems
  • PLC programing and troubleshooting experience
  • Experience designing and building control systems
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems and equipment

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • May be required to climb ladders for equipment inspection
  • May be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support mission critical projects
  • Will require radiation training and very occasional work in a radiological controlled area

  • Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $78700 - $131750 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
