Assistant Director for Advising & Mentoring

MULTIPLE POSITIONS

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking applications for multiple Assistant Directors for Advising and Mentoring for the Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA). Founded in 1867, the University of Illinois is one of the nation\'s original 37 public land-grant institutions. The University of Illinois is home to approximately 56,000 students and 12,000 faculty and staff.

The OMSA Advising & Mentoring services are offered to targeted students (e.g., first year Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Presidents Award Program (PAP), historically underrepresented students, transfer, students from low-sending counties and recipients of admissions fee-waivers are considered). The OMSA is committed to providing students with high quality mentoring and support programs to improve their academic achievement.

The Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) provides leadership in developing, implementing, and delivering student support services to improve the retention, academic achievement, graduation, and success of undergraduates at Illinois, particularly, students who identify as first-generation, historically underrepresented, low-income, and/or educationally disadvantaged. OMSA promotes and develops educational opportunities and enrichment activities to help facilitate the educational and personal growth of student participants through organized activities and collaborative efforts with Student Affairs departments, the colleges and academic departments, and other campus and community partners. The OMSA is comprised of administrative areas including Advising and Mentoring (A&M), Tutoring and Academic Services (TAS), First-Generation Student Initiatives (First-Gen), and TRIO Administrative & Business Services (TABS). The OMSA\'s also administers four TRIO programs including two programs for undergraduates: TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars Program, and two additional programs for pre-college populations: TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Talent Search.

As a part of Student Success, Inclusion, and Belonging within Student Affairs, OMSA provides support for students to reach their personal, academic, and professional goals through curricular and co-curricular engagement opportunities. OMSA reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success, Inclusion, and Belonging (SSIB).

Job Summary

Works alongside the Director of Advising & Mentoring to oversee the day-to-day operations, workshops/programs, and outreach methods. Monitors daily activities, identifies needs, and supervises multiple Student Success Advisors. Advises students on their personal, educational, and academic performance goals. Assists in implementing policies and procedures related to the academic operations and success of students.

Duties & Responsibilities

Student Success Advising, Advocacy, and Support

Advises students on their personal, educational, and academic performance goals to identify academic strengths and challenges, gauge adjustment to academic and social life on campus, and provide advice regarding viable pathways that may lead to enhanced student success.

Provides academic advising to students, depending on unit needs.

Maintains accurate and detailed student records, tracks student performance, and when applicable, develops and presents reports.

Conducts proactive outreach and intervention activities with students, selecting strategies where there is a strong likelihood of positively impacting student persistence and academic success.

Leadership/Supervision

Assists with hiring, onboarding, and training for Student Success Advisors.

Supervises, supports, develops, and evaluates an assigned cohort of Student Success Advisors, including regular one-on-ones, goal- and driven annual plans and evaluations, and daily availability and connection-building.

Engages in regular team meetings, seeking feedback and providing timely updates.

Provides consistent recognition and constructive feedback to direct reports, ensuring an environment that includes regular praise, support, and opportunities for ongoing improvement.

Builds, fosters, and maintains intentional relationships with the colleges departments and/or relevant campus units to ensure accurate dissemination of information.

Serves as a resource for faculty and staff in matters related to academic services. Acts as liaison between students, faculty, and professional schools

Assists with developing, coordinating, and disseminating a cohesive OMSA communication strategy and sharing said information with colleges, departments and/or relevant campus units.

Administrative/Student Success Programming Coordination and Development

Works with the Director for Advising and Mentoring to manage timely logistical support for relevant advising, mentoring, and coaching processes, including caseload management, duty rotation and office location scheduling.
