Job Summary

To control and monitor the campus energy equipment (i.e.; boilers, turbines, piping, and their auxiliary devices). Operate and maintain utility production, distribution, and HVAC equipment across campus. Ensure safe work practices and procedures are being always followed.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains mechanical equipment through automation systems and local manual control (such as boilers, pumps, HVAC, and any other associated equipment). Adjusts manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems, or shut down equipment.

  • Monitors equipment for alarms, takes appropriate actions to address the issue, and maintains logs of all operation and maintenance.

  • Serve as On-Duty Point of contact for campus customers and Facilities and Services groups/divisions.

    a. Answer phone lines and electronic messaging methods regarding F&S trouble calls.

    b. Determine priorities on mechanical equipment issues.

    c. Request work orders.

    d. Provide support to crafts and trades, DDC Specialist, campus personnel, and other groups within Facilities and Services.

  • Communicates and explains equipment problems to the appropriate maintenance personnel.

  • Adjust setpoints and schedules on mechanical systems within campus buildings to assure efficient and reliable operation of university energy assets.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Interacts with Campus Customers, Supervision, peers, crafts and trades shops, and other groups within Facilities and Services.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Supervisory Controls

Equipment and systems are operated within preset limits. Changes beyond normal conditions must be approved by the appropriate supervisor and/or technical lead.

2. Guidelines

Guidelines are from operating manuals or written instructions.

Must be familiar with mechanical systems.

3. Must conform to safety regulations of both F&S and OSHA standards.

Misc.

Support the Mission, Vision, Values and Guiding Principles of Facilities & Services.

Promote safe operations and support departmental safety initiatives and programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in a position comparable to the Steam and Power Plant I.
  • Possession of valid/current licenses and certificates, as required by the employing institution.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
  • 1. Working knowledge of mechanical equipment (such as boilers, pumps, HVAC and any other associated equipment).
  • 2. Ability to understand start-up procedures and operating standards set by manufacturers.
  • 3. Ability to understand technical drawings.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4991 - Steam and Power Plant II position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 7/8/2024. The pay rate for this position is \$38.40 per hour.
