Role Overview:
This position will serve as an Environmental Intern for the Vincennes District Capital Program Management Environmental Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The intern is responsible for helping to prepare and review environmental documents in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), INDOT and other applicable regulatory agencies. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to the Vincennes Senior Environmental Manager Supervisor.
Salary Statement:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

This position is located in INDOT’s Vincennes District.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
Collects, researches, and digitizes environmental data
Collects and analyzes field data
Main project will include completion of all environmental research and on-site investigations (with staff assistance) for the 2024/2025 capital program and maintenance program as assigned
Prepares environmental documents for various other INDOT projects, including the development and coordination of environmental related reports
Ensures compliance with federal & state regulations
Provides related technical assistance in development & maintenance of tracking logs using data base management system

What You'll Need for Success:
Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
Working towards or recently received a Bachelor Degree in Environmental, Biological, or related field
Academic work in related field
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
Ability to conduct well-informed research
Ability to solve complex, critical problems
Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
Relevant work experience preferred
Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
Analytical skills
Ability to handle multiple projects
Ability to operate computer tools
Good research and writing skills
Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
Ability to complete low to moderate level exertion during outdoor field work
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
