GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking to hire a contract Fisheries Biologist to coordinate and implement the second season of a 2-year project surveying Colorado River Cutthroat Trout populations in southwest Wyoming. The biologist will be responsible for planning and implementing fieldwork, supervising technicians, analyzing data, and writing a final report. The preferred start date for this contract position is May 28, 2024, and is funded through February 28, 2025. This field position will require the operation of trucks, ATVs, and electrofishing equipment in rivers and streams. Use of trailers may also be frequently required to haul camp gear and equipment to remote work sites during weekly sampling events. This position will be based out of Green River, Wyoming.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Work with public and private landowners and professionally represent the WGFD.

  • Collaborate with other biologists to complete a rigorous sampling schedule.

  • Lead up to 4 technicians to sample fish with electrofishing gears.

  • Operate trucks, trailers, and ATVs to access remote locations.

  • Compile, enter, and analyze data and produce a final report.

  • Make purchases for the project, file appropriate paperwork, and manage the project budget.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference may be given to those with a degree in fisheries management, ecology, ichthyology, biology, natural resources management, or another closely related field, AND one or more years of applicable field experience.

*Must have a valid driver's license

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Experience with fish identification and fish handling.

  • Experience with backpack and raft/barge electrofishing.

  • Experience leading a field crew to collect biological data and genetic samples.

  • Experience with analytical spatial software.

  • Experience writing formal reports.

  • Experience camping in remote locations for a week at a time.

  • Ability to safely operate and troubleshoot electrofishing equipment.

  • Ability to work in the field in remote areas, often in adverse conditions.

  • Ability to lead others while maintaining a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and work well with others in a team setting.

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to perform field work under adverse weather conditions.

  • Ability to hike on and off trail carrying a heavy backpack over long distances.

  • Overnight travel and camping in the field will be required.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-exempt

  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check before an appointment.

  • Lodging, waders, rain gear, uniform, and all other necessary field equipment and expenses will be provided when in the field. Off-duty housing is not provided.
