Nielsen Health & Safety Manager in United States

The Safety Manager is a safety professional who ensures the compliance of health and safety laws in the workplace. The H&S Manager develops and executes health and safety plans, enforce policies, assess risks, and promote a culture of safety. The role is to create a safe work environment and minimize hazards to protect employees from occupational risks.

Scope: A Safety Manager is responsible for developing and implementing health and safety plans, enforcing policies, and evaluating practices and facilities to ensure compliance with legal guidelines. The H&S manager conducts training sessions, monitors compliance, investigates accidents, and provides recommendations for safety improvement. They also communicate safety guidelines to employees, report on l health and safety issues, and develop relevant policies to maintain a safe workplace. Their focus is on promoting occupational health and safety and minimizing risks for employees.

Responsibilities

  • Alerts management of emergencies, investigation of the emergencies, root cause analysis and solutions to prevent emergency recurrence.

  • Hold/attend safety meetings as a pillar member of various cross functional safety teams - virtually and face to face.

  • Remains current to applicable OSHA and other governing global programs.

  • Assist health and safety regulators in carrying out checks/audits.

  • Monitor existing and new legislation/regulations on health and safety in order to ensure that Nielsen is current and complies with requirements.

  • Establishing, implementing and maintaining health and safety standards, goals, and policies.

  • Act as the H&S regulatory resource in collaboration for Nielsen.

  • Provide guidance and oversight of H&S record keeping.

  • Ensures Nielsen is legally compliant with global health and safety legislation.

  • Assess, analyze and mitigate associated risk(s) with offices, warehouses, operations, field and work practices.

  • Develop and/or review minimum health and safety standards for compliance by Nielsen staff.

  • Prepare and enforce H&S policies to establish a positive culture of health and safety.

  • Provide compliance assurance, audits, with Nielsen and regulatory requirements regarding global environmental health and safety.

  • Duties include corroboration of recordable, near-miss, and critical situation(s).

  • Duties include record keeping of each recordable, near-miss, and critical situation(s)

  • Provide for H&S performance data metrics for H&S performance dashboard.

  • Participate in job risk assessments to ensure safe working procedures.

  • Drive implementation of H&S initiatives regarding contractor management on high-risk activities such as Confined Space Entry, Electrical Safety, LO/TO, Elevated Work and general construction.

Tasks:

  • Enforce machines and equipment are in safe working order and signed off.

  • Ensures the maintenance of stocked first aid.

  • Ensures Nielsen sites/offices are free from hazardous substances/materials or stored as per regulation.

  • Assure fire drills are conducted for Nielsen employees, consultants and guests.

  • Ensures forklifts are inspected, training is conducted, battery stations have working eyewash stations.

  • Ensures cradle to grave recycling of batteries - forklifts, UPS, …

  • Develop and execute H&S plans in the workplace according to Nielsen, compliance and legal guidelines.

  • Conduct training, safety meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action and implement follow up assessments.

  • Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions

  • Investigate accidents/ incidents for root causes to support worker’s compensation claims

  • Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures

  • Report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics

  • Provide project management H&S oversight.

  • Assess and identify appropriate resources and equipment necessary to support H&S objectives.

  • H&S contact person for contractors and Nielsen permits.

  • Complies with cradle to grave battery cycling.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Practical working knowledge of Health and Safety tools and techniques, ideally within Facilities and Project Management.

  • Ability to communicate H&S information, both orally and/or in writing Success as a leader working with employees, management, contractors/vendors supporting mutual safety objectives.

  • Proven track record of success executing high hazard prevention programs; specifically: LO/TO, electrical safety, confined space entry and elevated work/fall protection.

  • A proven track record managing regulatory compliance

  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant standards, legislation, codes of practice, guidance and operating procedures on a global scale.

  • Presentation skills to deliver SME advice at all levels and to deliver localized training to staff as required.

  • Strong organizational skills, information management proficiency and collaborative management style are needed.

  • Ability to effectively and efficiently handle pressure and still keep working schedules.

  • Attention to detail

  • College degree in Health and Safety field and/or a minimum of five or more years of experience in the implementation and management of H&S programs and health and safety management systems required.

  • Relevant/Current professional certification(s) General Industry/Construction OSHA certifications desired (CHM, CSHM, CIH, CSP, CEP, etc.)

A reasonable estimate of salary range for a new employee to be offered this role would be between $66,000-$120,000 which would be adjusted based on each employee's geographic location. The position of each employee within a compensation range at Nielsen is dependent on several individual circumstances, such as experience, training, certifications and other business requirements/needs
