Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for the provision of library services to teens 13 - 18; fostering and facilitating teen participation in the development and implementation of teen library programming; advising and instructing teens in their use and evaluation of library materials and information sources; conducting outreach to teens in community venues including schools; advocating for teens in the library organization and community; providing reference and reader's reference and reader's advisory instruction and assistanc e. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. May directly supervise assigned staff and volunteers.

Work Location

One of 28 branch library locations.

Work Schedule

Work schedule varies and is based on departmental needs; Monday-Saturday work week; evenings and weekends required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Cultivates strong participation and ownership of library services and programming by teens (aged 13 to 18).

  • Provides direct public services to teens (aged 13 to 18) in the library setting, through school visits and off-site delivery of library service in community venues.

  • Promotes library services for teens through engagement with parents, educators and other youth-serving community agencies.

  • Acts as a lead in the Teen Services Librarian workgroup.

  • Assumes the responsibilities of the branch in the manager’s absence.

  • May s erve as an Assistant Manager of a branch or Central Library unit.

  • Serves as Assistant Manager or section head in their absence.

  • Develops, implements and evaluates programs and services within the framework of SAPL’s teen services mission and with teen involvement whenever possible.

  • Advocates for teens in the Library organization and Carver community.

  • Keeps up-to-date with popular culture and technological advances and online platforms of interest to teens.

  • Monitors use and oversees maintenance of branch young adult collection and other areas as assigned.

  • Assumes the responsibilities of a branch or section head in his or her absence.

  • Provides direct reference and readers’ advisory services to the general public.

  • Trains staff in policies, procedures, and operation of various automated systems.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science or Information Studies/Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university.

  • One (1) year of experience as a professional librarian or three (3) years of professional experience relevant to the appropriate age based group.

  • No substitution for education allowed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passion for and desire to work with teens (aged 13 to 18 years) in a public library setting.

  • Experience supervising daily operations of a facility and/or serving as a direct supervisor to assigned staff.

  • Experience advising and instructing teens in their use and evaluation of library materials and information sources.

  • Experience providing reference and reader’s advisory instruction and assistance.

  • Experience fostering and facilitating teen participation in the development and implementation of teen library programming.

  • Experience conducting outreach to teens in community venues including schools; advocating for teens in the library organization and community.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of library principles, methods, materials, and practices.

  • Familiarity with the developmental needs of teens (aged 13 to 18) in order to provide the most appropriate resources and services.

  • Knowledge of literature for and by teens in traditional and emerging formats.

  • Knowledge of cataloging principles and techniques.

  • Knowledge of reference tools and services.

  • Knowledge of professional library publications and the literature of librarianship.

  • Skill in operating a personal computer, PC applications, and the use of electronic resources as used in libraries.

  • Ability to maintain awareness of ongoing technological advances and how they can improve access to information and services for teens (aged 13 to 18).

  • Ability to create an environment that embraces the flexible and changing nature of teens’ entertainment, technological and informational needs

  • Ability to analyze training needs and make presentations.

  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Ability to handle all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
