Mid-Level Distribution Designer

Summary of Roles and Responsibilities

POWER Engineers, Inc. is seeking a Mid-Level Distribution Designer for the Power Delivery Distribution Department in Tyler, Texas or FT Worth, TX. The qualified candidate should have previous exposure to utility standards, the ability to use common industry design software packages, as well as general construction knowledge and aptitude. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for performing designs on both overhead and underground distribution systems (4 kV to 35 kV)

  • Perform calculations, interpret codes and standards, create construction packages, and perform quality control reviews.

  • Must be capable of working both independently and within a team framework and will be expected to deal directly with clients.

  • Must possess the ability to lead and direct a team of engineers, designers, and drafters

  • Some travel should be expected

Required Education/Experience

  • Five (5) + years of experience in designing and operating overhead and underground distribution lines (4 kV through 35 kV)

  • Familiarity with distribution design software, the National Electric Safety Code, and utility best practices

  • Experience preparing forestry trimming requests, facilitating permit and Right-of-Way acquisition, estimating costs, and customer advocacy such as, acquiring easements

  • Underground design experience working and coordinating with developers for new residential, commercial developments and high rises

  • Experience designing underground feeders from the Substation, cable sizing and cable derating

  • Familiarity with OH feeder, lateral and riser design, pole bore and pole foreman

  • Strong command of the English language and possess good written and oral communications skills

  • Must be able to successfully pass client's background screening process

  • Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record

Desired Education/Experience

  • A two-year technical certificate or degree, prior utility design experience, or distribution line construction

  • Exposure to utility Geographical Information Systems (GIS) such as GE Smallworld, ArcFM, DDS, DM, etc.

  • AutoCAD experience
