University Corporation for Atmospheric Research Postdoctoral Fellow I in United States

Job Description Summary: The selected postdoctoral fellow will be supported by NCAR’s MMM laboratory to advance data assimilation for analyses and forecasts of atmospheric clouds. Work will be performed in the context of the Prediction and data Assimilation for Cloud (PANDA-C) project and will employ the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) and the Joint Effort for Data assimilation Integration (JEDI). The incumbent will collaborate with PANDA-C staff on and, where appropriate, lead novel research to improve data assimilation algorithms, refine the use of satellite observations in those algorithms, or develop novel approaches in either area. The incumbent will perform computational experiments with MPAS-JEDI on NCAR high-performance computing and will contribute to developing necessary algorithmic, workflow, and diagnostic capabilities in the MPAS-JEDI system.

The postdoctoral fellow will bring knowledge in data assimilation or atmospheric modeling for numerical weather prediction (NWP). Knowledge of satellite remote sensing and use of high-performance computing is highly desirable.

The postdoctoral fellow will work collaboratively with staff within NCAR’s MMM laboratory, with university collaborators, and with those at other laboratories nationally and internationally to advance data assimilation with MPAS-JEDI while gaining post-doctoral research experience.
