Job Description

The Staff Forester / Woodland Ecologist I will serve as forest survey crew leader and be responsible for the survey program in the assigned region. The Staff Forester / Woodland Ecologist will investigate land ownership in the tax office, contact landowners, locate field plots, collect and transmit forestry survey data and meet production goals as well as assist with local and statewide incident response and other agency program duties.

Responsibilities: -Serve as forest survey crew leading and be responsible for the survey program in the assigned region. Investigate land ownership in the tax office, contact landowners, locate field plots, collect and transmit forest survey data and meet production goals.

1)Maintain QA average <95%

2)Meet monthly production goals

3)Effectively supervise technical field staff

4)Effectively acquire access to plot locations

5)Assist with hiring of technical field staff

6)Assist with training of new FIA employees

7)Assist with regional special studies.

  • May require extended personal, telephone, or electronic communications.

  • May require working long hours, with minimal rest in severe conditions.

  • May require walking long distances, standing for extended periods, twisting, bending, reaching and kneeling

  • May require lifting and carrying heavy objects

  • May require driving motor vehicles for long distances.

  • May require exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as wind, sunlight, rain & temperature extremes.

  • Acquire USFS FIA 'Certified Cruiser' certification within six months of employment.

  • Involvement in local natural resource organization (SAF, TFA, FLA..) Assist with delivery of other local agency programs as available (Management plans, Con. Ed programs, fire prevention/suppression, WUI..)

    -Assist with local and statewide incident response operation and other agency programs. Maintain FFT2 NWCG Certification.

    Working Conditions: Outdoor field work

    -Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:Required Education: Bachelors degree in Forestry, Forestry Management, Range Science, Natural Resource Management or closely related course of study.

Preferred Education: Masters degree in Forestry, Forestry Management, Range Science, Natural Resource Management or closely related course of study. Required Experience: None

Preferred Experience : Experience in field of natural resources, production or working as part of a team.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Preferred knowledge: Full understanding of cooperation with federal agenciesRequired Ability: Communicate clearly. Multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Ability: Lead and motivate large staff.

Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:Required: Valid Texas Drivers license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

Preferred: USFS Certified Cruiser. SAF Certified Forester.

Other Requirements:Must be able to work overtime w/some overnight travel; in the field for extended periods of time.
