Summary What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Responsibilities As a SUPERVISORY COMPUTER SCIENTIST (Lead Developer) within the VOLCANO SCIENCE CENTER, some of your specific duties will include: Exercise first-level supervisory responsibilities over 5-10 computer scientists and IT specialists (including EDGE computer scientists) working remotely or at the four VSC facilities (Vancouver, Mountain View, Hilo and Anchorage). Lead the software development group in the theoretical foundations of computer science, knowledge of the design and limitations of hardware and software systems. Establish a professional development process consistent with the Department of Interior IT Solution Development Lifecycle Guide. Serve as staff advisor for the study of appropriate emerging computer and senior software developer for the VSC with advising, overseeing, or executing other software development projects. Work closely with the field engineering instrumentation teams at each VSC observatory to streamline and improve data acquisition and analysis software products and tools. Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION: Applicants must meet either A or B to satisfy the basic education requirement for Computer Scientist, at all grade levels. A) Bachelor's or higher degree in computer science. OR B) A bachelor's or higher degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. Evaluation of Education: All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions. Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and to other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable. FOR GS-14: In addition to the basic education requirement listed above, applicants must also meet the following to qualify: One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of such experience may include management of the software development for a major project or system initiative involving new or unexplored areas of system theory, data structures, architecture and communications; overseeing the development of integrated systems. Work has required full documentation and responsibility for all procedures, methods, and techniques used, as well as the development of new guidelines for use and implementation. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
