GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a full-time Construction and Field Survey Technician located in Buffalo, Wyoming, where you will enjoy The Big Horn Mountains, which offer various outdoor activities nearby, including snowmobiling skiing, camping, fishing, and hunting.

Under general supervision, the Construction and Field Survey Technician will perform various duties, including surveys and inspections on preliminary designs and construction projects, and conduct material testing to provide a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Organize project records.

  • Review and check project documentation.

  • Prepare, review, maintain, and file construction project records, estimates, and reports.

  • Assist with topographic surveys.

  • Conduct aggregate gradation testing, density testing for earthwork and surfacing, and concrete testing.

  • Perform survey tasks such as drive stakes, hubs, hold tapes, hold the rod, and instrument operation.

  • Perform minor surveying computations such as slopes, areas, volumes, cuts, fills, etc.

  • Inspect pipe backfill and fill construction.

  • Inspect paving operations to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.

  • Perform basic engineering computations such as areas, volumes, material spread rates, etc.

  • Perform testing and sampling on bridges and roadways for analysis.

  • Review and learn traffic control methods, manuals, and procedures.

  • Perform more complex lab tests of samples and document results for QA/QC purposes.

  • Attend and complete all designated training sessions to maintain required certifications and perform inspections.

  • Communicate internally and externally regarding project information and courses of action/consequences on smaller projects.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference may be given to applicants with experience using the Trimble TS2 data collector and Geopak and Topcon software.

**Agency may require: Defensive Driving, WYDOT Portland Cement Concrete, Asphalt Concrete, Soil & Aggregate, ACI Concrete Level 2, QC/QA Certification in Soils & Aggregate, Asphalt and Concrete. American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Certification, Valid Wyoming Driver's License

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of materials testing, surveying methods, equipment operation, or willingness to learn.

  • Knowledge of construction inspection includes the interpretation of plans and specifications or willingness to learn.

  • Knowledge of documentation of project records.

  • Knowledge of effective communication methods with supervisors and contractors.

  • Knowledge of working towards a leadership role or willingness to learn.

  • Knowledge of working outdoors and a variety of weather conditions.

  • Knowledge of material testing, ability to perform complicated computer calculations, or willingness to learn.

  • Knowledge of survey methods & ability to apply such as uploading & downloading survey files.

  • Knowledge of computers and calculators.

  • Knowledge of surveying.

  • Knowledge of contract time, administration & contract changes, or willingness to learn.

  • Knowledge of engineering computations/formulas or ability to learn.

  • Knowledge of core drilling equipment, pneumatic & electric jackhammers, and hand tools or willingness to learn.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience Substitution:

2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Construction and Field Surveying) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Construction and Field Survey Assistant

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Potentially exposed to hazardous waste and biological waste.

  • Workaround high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.

  • Work outdoors in various inclement weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and moisture.

  • Physical Ability: bending, stooping, and lifting up to fifty pounds; safely lifting and moving necessary materials from one point to another; Ability to stand for long periods.

  • Must be available to work Monday through Saturday during the construction season.

  • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.

  • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.

  • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
