Requirements

The Custodian Supervisor supervises custodial staff by directing building cleaning and related services. S/he ensures that custodial staff is scheduled and assigned to various buildings and/or areas, inspects work to ensure satisfactory performance, takes action to correct deficiencies, and takes necessary steps to meet special requirements or circumstances. This employee supervises staff but may also be required to perform tasks assigned to custodians when necessary. They also coordinate issues promptly and thoroughly with the manager of custodial services. Demonstrating a willingness to serve, additional duties include but are not limited to:

  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with building contacts, Community Directors, and Facilities Coordinators throughout their areas of responsibility, including planning and routinely scheduling customer meetings to ensure customer satisfaction.

  • Ensure all projects, maintenance, or cleaning challenges are communicated effectively for resolution, serving as liaison with customers within areas assigned.

  • Maintain regular contact with staff, Director, and Residence Life and Housing Operations staffs to ensure that needs, requests, complaints, and problems are addressed, keeping employees informed of users’ concerns and plans.

  • Maintain contact with other Custodial Supervisors to notify and be notified of special requests or concerns and responses that need to be attended to during the evening, night, or day shift.

  • Direct custodial services for assigned areas and develop work schedules, coordinating workloads for the team for the purpose of ensuring efficient services.

  • Ensure staffing and work schedules meet requirements of a clean and safe living environment and academic environment for the building users, conducting meetings daily for the purpose of disseminating information to their team.

  • Complete formal, monthly inspections of staff assigned areas with cloud-based software system, reviewing the data monthly with employees and sharing/interpreting necessary data for actionable items, including necessary training for employees based on inspection data.

  • Routinely check and ensure maintenance of stock levels in closets and/or applicable supply rooms, ensuring maintenance of custodial equipment and service equipment as necessary.

  • Inspect and perform a daily checklist of scheduled cleaning done by all staff under supervision.

  • Manage all hiring of direct reports and participate in the selection of new employees, training, supervising, and evaluating custodial staff.

  • Train staff on a regular cycle in cleaning methods and techniques, equipment usage, chemical usage, and related aspects of custodial work.

  • Act as “essential” personnel, assessing, reporting, and advising Assistant Director and Facilities Management Director regarding the operational status of all campuses and centers during emergencies and extreme weather events.

Work Interactions

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Custodial Services and works along side a Night Operations Manager, a Athletic and Events Director, Events Supervisor, Day Custodial Supervisors, Evening Custodial Supervisors, two other Residential Custodial Supervisors and Weekend Custodial Supervisors. Reporting directly to this position are ten to fifteen custodians and one to two floor care specialists. The incumbent and staff work during the day shift hours to ensure buildings are maintained and emergencies are taken care of. The incumbent’s area of responsibility will cover 300,000 to 450,000 square feet of space. May be called upon to lead and/or participate in department and college wide committees. This position serves as a representative for the University Facilities department to the university community and visitors. The incumbent must act in a professional manner, carry proper identification and comply with University and department policies and procedures. The incumbent serves as a member of a team demonstrating a willingness to be flexible with personal and staff schedule to accommodate emergency situations such as staffing shortages and snow removal. This position will work a Sunday through Thursday work schedule.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • College degree preferred

  • One to four years of custodial experience

  • Required to have a valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia driver’s license

  • Requires a basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally as well as to work as part of a team

  • Must have ability to act independently and exercise mature judgement with the capability to analyze relevant operational issues and identify solutions

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required

  • Some plant operation maintenance experience is helpful

  • Has a demonstrable knowledge of the chemistry behind the cleaning process and keeps pace with the changing technology and its application

  • Some computer literacy helpful

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$41,926.00 - $65,090.00

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
