Red Hat Senior Software Quality Engineer - Debezium in Waterford City, Ireland

The position of Senior Quality Engineer within the Red Hat Quality Engineering (QE) team requires a passion for open source software, automation and the impact that our products have on our customers. In this role you work on one of the key projects within the Middleware QE organization, which reaches across Red Hat’s diverse solution portfolio. The work that you do connects you to some of the Java and database software talent in the open source community.

You will want to bring a desire to continually improve our deliverables and approaches, with which we verify quality, functionality and performance of the Debezium software. You enjoy the challenge of understanding both the internal operation of our software and how our customers get the most out of our solution for their business. You thrive on automating all of our testing, as well as working closely with software developers and ensuring that quality is designed into the products. In short, you are driven to make quality engineering an experience filled with innovation and collaboration.

Debezium is an open-source project that is building a distributed platform for capturing changes from databases with very low latency. Written in Java and working heavily with DBMS-specific features to create connectors that capture the changes and write them as events to Kafka in the same order they appear in the databases, allowing other applications and services to consume and react to these changes, Debezium is designed to never miss changes, even when things go wrong.

What you will do

  • Help define and implement automated test strategies, methodologies, processes, and procedures

  • Investigate and recommend test infrastructure tools to support the quality engineering methodology, process, and procedures

  • Work with other QE team members to architect and implement automated functional testing across the Debezium components

  • Analyze source code and closely integrate with the development team to provide immediate feedback on quality and propose appropriate test strategies for product subsystems

  • Establish best practices for a variety of team disciplines, including code structure, test architecture and automation strategy

  • Develop automated tests in accordance with department policies and process, as well as establishing frameworks for these automated tests

  • Create product wide test plans and strategies and contribute to product plans

  • Oversee the work of other quality engineers, provide advices to software engineers and be a resource for technical guidance of the team

  • Participate in and contribute to weekly team meetings and project management meetings

  • Interact with external partners and customers regarding testing strategies and results

  • Schedule and guide reviews with management and senior technical leadership

  • Provide an accurate and timely status of testing efforts and quality metrics to the broader project team

What you will bring

  • 4+ years of software development or software testing experience

  • Experience with automation and orchestration frameworks like Ansible

  • Experience with solutions like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Microsoft Azure, or OpenShift by Red Hat

  • Familiarity with various deployment models, including cloud, virtualization, and containers

  • Experience with GitHub, GitLab, or other collaborative code forges

  • Passion for open source technologies; previous experience with open source communities and development is a plus

  • Advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills

  • Understanding of quality assurance and engineering concepts

  • Advanced knowledge of the Java programming language

  • Familiarity with the most widely used databases

  • 3+ years using the Linux operating system including Bash scripting experience

  • Fluent written and verbal English language skills

  • Knowledge of CI systems like Jenkins
