Position Purpose:

Under limited supervision, serves to provide instruction in the specific content area of Phlebotomy and Lab Specimen Processing including Point of Care Testing (POCT). Teach and train using approved training plan. Provide trainees with clear course objectives and expectations. Ensure that training content and objectives are met. Utilize a variety of teaching styles and methods to accommodate the diverse learning styles of colleagues. Comply with all institutional, accrediting and regulatory agency policies and procedures. Respond to trainee questions and inquiries in a timely manner. Document concerns to the direct supervisor or Lab Leadership. Uphold the highest levels of professionalism and ethical conduct.

What you will Do:

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.

Demonstrates knowledge of performing Rapid and Point-Of-Care testing in accordance with written laboratory policy and procedure.

Demonstrates competent ability to train, observe, and verify other lab assistants work in procedures as directed. Assists in training to new hires and new procedures to existing colleagues.

Executes and reinforces all hospital/laboratory guidelines and policies on patient identification, blood borne pathogens, safety, confidentiality, HIPAA and other applicable procedures.

Assists in the development and implementation of new laboratory assistant policies and procedures, rapid and point-of-care patient testing procedures.

Is proficient in utilization of Laboratory Information System.

Demonstrates general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.)

Documents performance issues and reports to Supervisor/Director in a timely manner.

Instruct phlebotomists in the art of venipuncture techniques, anatomy and physiology.

Monitors competencies for each lab assistant and processor.

Adhere to Joint Commission and CAP requirements.

Complies with health and safety standards and guidelines such as maintaining a safe environment, reporting and recording of health and safety-related incidents, demonstrating understanding of emergency plans, and safe use of department equipment.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

Hours/Schedule:

Full time, 40 hours per week

Day shift, flexible hours dependent on the needs of the department. Weekends and holidays may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a minimum of 2 years of lab assistant experience in an acute care setting, including specimen procurement.

Must complete educational requirements as required to maintain ASCP certification.

Must possess excellent verbal and written communications skills, presentation skills, advanced analytical skills, be well organized and maintain a highly professional manner and appearance.

Strong interpersonal, consultative and relationship building skills in order to initiate and develop productive collaborative partnership with all levels of leadership across the organization. Ability to effectively influence results, garner support and tactfully manage complex relationships within and across the organization. Extremely high level of diplomacy and tact are required. Ability to read the subtle nuances of situation and react/plan accordingly.

Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health.
