GATE ATTENDANT I $15.97 - $21.40 / Hour

Definition

An eligibility list will be established for Full-Time, Part-Time, Extra Help, Emergency Extra Help, and On-Call positions for All Sites. Applications will be accepted until the eligibility list is full. Candidates will be contacted as openings occur.

Under supervision, to learn to evaluate solid waste loads, calculating fees; to provide instructions and disposal information at the transfer sites to the public; to calculate solid waste volumes; to oversee the actions of the site users; to learn to maintain records associated with transfer sites; and to do related work as required.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

(The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)

Learns to perform a variety of solid waste transfer site duties, including estimating and evaluating loads for price, types of materials and proper charging of fees; learns to instruct customers and direct them to the appropriate areas for dumping solid waste; calculates charges for customer tipping fees; maintains records of volumes and site visits manually or on computer; checks volume of special recycling areas such as oil tanks and batteries, determining need to have vendor pick-up material; uses radio to communicate with site staff and customers on load content and dump site operations; checks loads for hazardous waste and records findings; has responsibility for opening and closing the site gates; uses cash register to record charges and make change, balancing out at the end of the shift; learns to maintain records of solid waste activities on a monthly basis; performs general maintenance around the dump site; operates hand tools, power equipment, and vehicles; learns proper radio communications.

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Basic arithmetic. Basic report keeping procedures. Basic cashiering techniques and practices. Safe work practices and procedures.

Ability to:

Maintain accurate records. Learn to operate computerized scale and fee computation equipment. Learn fee computation methods. Receive money and make change. Deal tactfully and courteously with the public and other County staff when providing information. Make basic mathematical calculations. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Read and write at the level required for successful job performance. Prepare basic reports. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Prior work experience involving the handling of cash and including extensive public contact is desirable.

Special Requirements:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver's License.

Ability to be bondable.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Frequently stand and walk; ability to walk in uneven terrain and on slippery surfaces; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to crawl through various areas requiring movement on hands and knees; ability to climb, stoop, crouch, and kneel; lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; perform sustained physical work; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; operate an automobile; may use hand tools and power equipment.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an enclosed shelter, which may or may not have electrical power, plumbing, and/or phone; work is performed at remote site in varying temperatures; exposure to dust, chemicals, and gases; often works around moving ehicles and equipment; continuous contact with other staff.

Salary Information: Updated Salary Range July 1, 2023 $15.97 - $21.40* / Hour
