The Finance and Business Services Department provides timely, accurate and meaningful financial information and advice to the University community to support management decision-making, and to demonstrate fiscal responsibility, accountability, and regulatory compliance to the University's constituents.

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Accounting Manager is responsible for general accounting and reporting functions including oversight of banking activity, the student information system interface with the general ledger (SAP), the general ledger close process, and the preparation of various financial reports and tax-related returns.   This position provides leadership, support, and implementation of best practices and positive changes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the University's accounting function; supervises two Senior Accountants; and provides accounting guidance to campus partners.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills both on-site and in a remote work environment, a deep understanding of accounting principles, higher education experience, process improvement and automation experience, and a commitment to excellence in financial reporting and compliance.

 Responsibilities include:

  • Lead a team of two Senior Accountants responsible for ensuring timely reconciliation and recording of financial transactions 
  • Foster a standard of superior service and maintain cooperative and mutually beneficial relationships as a campus liaison
  • Evaluate and improve business processes to increase automation while ensuring that proper controls are in place
  • Maintain knowledge of GAAP, GASB, University and PASSHE policy, NACUBO, Department of Education, and other external regulations for application at WCU; Recommend and implement changes to policies and procedures to ensure compliance
  • Understand the banking transactions, review reconciliations, and assist with resolution of reconciliation issues
  • Serve as liaison to the campus community when implementing software or processes that require ACH or merchant ID activity
  • Oversee financial aid accounting and reporting including annual reporting for the Schedule Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA)
  • Oversee component unit accounting and reporting including review of annual financial statements and component unit FINRPT submission to PASSHE
  • Participate in the general ledger close process and work to establish monthly and annual closing schedules to ensure timely journal entries and reconciliations 
  • Assist in the management of the year-end financial statement audit process including time y submission of required documentation, responding to information requests and accurate completion of audit schedules
  • Assist in the preparation and review of the FINRPT, the annual financial statements including Management's Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) and other reports and surveys 
  • Assist in the preparation and review of tax filings including the 990-T
  • Other tasks, duties and special projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Five years of accounting and finance experience
  • Two years of experience with month-end close and associated financial reporting
  • Two years of management experience
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills* *

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business related field
  • CPA license
  • Higher Education experience
  • Experience with systems used in higher education (such as PeopleSoft, OnBase, Banner, SAP, and BI/Business Intelligence)

Special Instructions

The salary range for this position is $80,086 to $91,526.
