The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 166 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for the skilled mechanical maintenance, inspection, repair, and diagnosis of the District\'s equipment and alternative fuel vehicles. The District utilizes vehicles powered by CNG, LPG, E85, B20 biodiesel, hybrid, and plug-in electric.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspection, and repairs on the District\'s fleet of vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues reported in repair request reports from drivers.
  • Conduct pre-delivery inspections on new vehicles and equipment, checking operation, fluid levels, and installing necessary equipment and accessories for departmental use.
  • Decommission vehicles and equipment when retired from service, ensuring proper disposal and documentation.
  • Make service calls and perform repairs in the field when necessary, arranging for transportation to the shop if needed to complete repairs.
  • Refurbish and overhaul vehicles and equipment as needed to prolong their useful life, including repairing or replacing worn parts and restoring them to like-new condition.
  • Inspect and maintain shop tools, equipment, and working areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Design and fabricate parts for equipment and specialized projects as needed, including building unique equipment for a particular department\'s needs, and assist with welding tasks when required.
  • Foster a working environment that promotes safe work habits; Become familiar with and observe all applicable safety rules, policies, and work procedures; Follow all safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of the District\'s safety and risk management program; Keep work area clean, orderly, and free of hazards; Immediately report all unsafe conditions and incidents.
  • Maintain a supportive working environment and demonstrate a desire to exceed the expectations of internal and external customers.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Must provide standard mechanic tool set and toolbox up to and including one inch socket.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
  • Skilled Trades & Technical Training, 1 - 3 years of related experience as an automotive mechanic, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Driver\'s License in good standing.
  • Alternative Fuel Repair Certification required within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain 3 ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) or equivalent automotive certifications within 1 year of employment.
  • Electric Drive Train Certification required within 6 months of employment.
  • Must provide standard mechanic tool set and toolbox up to and including a one-inch socket.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of engine and chassis unit\'s standard repair and maintenance procedures.
  • Understanding of drive trains, brake systems, heating and cooling systems, electrical systems, and a dditional systems of a variety of vehicles.
  • Understanding of specialized turf maintenance equipment including aerators, reel mowers, trimmers, etc.
  • Understanding of machinery including snow blowers, motor vehicles, and chainsaws.
  • Proficient in performing repairs to various types of small equipment and vehicles.
  • Skilled in the care of tools and equipment used in serving vehicles.
  • Skilled in using electronic diagnostic equipment including Ford Diagnostic Software, Stihl Diagnostic Scan Tool, and other standard diagnostic tools.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and data.

Starting Pay:\$27.80 - \$31.29 an hour.

Eligible for possible annual pay increases based upon performance.
