Job Summary:
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3-5+ years of experience in Conventional & CNC Machining of Precision Optical Components; Produces machined parts by setting up, and operating a conventional optical equipment, as well as computer numerical control (CNC) machines - maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; maintaining equipment and supplies.
Summary of Essential Job Duties:
Develop, lead and run programs of CNC machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
Responsible in reviewing final machining and sizing of components as required supporting prototype, pre-production, production programs and rework to include documentations.
Individual is responsible for set-up and maintaining Nakamura-Tome Centering Machines.
Set-up and maintain process on CM-2/C-2/C-50 CNC Centering Machines. Center lenses to print specifications. Ability to work a A/B/C shift.
Maintains specifications by observing in process inspection methods adjusting and reprogramming controls’ sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
Provide technical support for engineering services including process development and review, tooling design and labor estimates.
Provides training to production employees on key processes and procedures as applicable to their respective production area. Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work-related issues.
Ensures quality of the finished product by continually reinforcing a strong and open working relationship between the quality and production departments.
Must be able to operate mechanical test equipment – calipers, micrometers, comparator and sag gauges.
Understand Lean Manufacturing Fundamentals including 5S standards and housekeeping.
Responsible to ensure department yield levels are kept over 85%.
Work off shifts as required; including weekends.
Conventional / CNC Fabricating Qualifications
Sizing, grinding, polishing of optical materials using conventional and/or CNC methods.
Maintain a neat and orderly work area.
Maintain tooling and equipment used during fabrication.
Follow Environmental Health and Safety procedures.
Maintain production records using Epicor tracking system.
Follow work instructions
Additional Job Duties:
Common polishing processes and capable of setting up and running conventional polishing equipment.
Polishing carious radii from plano to strong radius.
Set-up and measure lens radius and surface irregularity using an interferometer.
Inspect and identify lens surface defects per optical industry standards.
Understand and interpret lens drawings and specifications.
Team player on projects, process improvement methods, solutions, and procedures to enhance quality, cost, and scheduling.
Good computer skills are required for lens data recording.
Ability to create tooling (from wax polishers) and support tooling for polishing process.
Minimum Requirements:
Competent shop math and algebra skills required.
Computer programing/CNC skills
Stand for extended periods of time.
Willingness to work overtime and weekends when required.
Requirements and Competencies:
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents. Ability to communicate effectively to team members and management.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts.
Educational Requirements:
3-5+ years’ manufacturing experience, plus experience in Conventional and CNC Machining – precision optical equipment preferred.
High School degree or GED Required.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand: use hands to fingers, handle or feel: and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch: and talk and hear.
The job may involve prolong periods of sitting/standing.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May involve prolonged periods of magnified inspection (eye strain)
Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
The employee is frequently required to use the computer.
Work Environment:
May involve the use of oils and solvents.
Subject to some soilage and irritation from cleaning solutions. (Lab Coats provided)
Generally works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
Safety Glasses are required
May require area specific safety training
This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne paper particles.
May work at different workstations as production needs require, or shifts from one station to another, during the production process.
