Duties Description Duties include but may not be limited to:• Perform engineering duties related to a group of electrical systems projects.• Advise on electrical systems design or management of ongoing rehabilitation of existing electrical equipment.• Assist a higher-level professional engineer overseeing subcontractors or development of electrical specifications writing and estimates of work.• Evaluate operational problems in existing electrical systems.• May supervise consultant work.• Perform other duties as assigned.• Some travel may be required.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:Applicants must have proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) exam AND one of the following:• qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below, OR• one year of full-time qualifying experience as listed below.This title includes a traineeship opportunity and applicants must meet one of the following:Either 1. A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology as listed below;Or 2. Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience as listed below.Engineer Trainees must possess one of the above and serve a minimum of 52 weeks and a maximum of 104 weeks probation. Appointees who obtain proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) exam may advance to Assistant Engineer, Grade 20, after one-year of service; those who fail to pass the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) exam by the end of the second year of appointment will be terminated.Applicants may be appointed to this position if currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title OR are a current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to a Grade 20 and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.Qualifying degrees: Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.Qualifying experience: One year of full-time engineering experience in electrical systems.
Additional Comments *There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired via NY HELPS will be appointed on a permanent non-competitive basis and will begin a probationary period.At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.
