School Psychologist - West Valley JobID: 453Position Type:Related Service Providers/School PsychologistDate Posted:10/3/2024Location:BOCES - West Valley CSDClosing Date:Open Until FilledSchool Psychologist - West ValleyDivision:Exceptional EducationSupervisor:Special Education SupervisorBasic Function:The primary goal of the school psychologist is to enable each student to derive the fullest possible educational experience from school by promoting their sense of self and by treating a psychological or mental health problem within the scope of the school psychologist's training. Appropriate referrals will be made for problems beyond the scope and training of the school psychologist to the special education supervisor to be acted upon by the Committee on Special Education. Performance Responsibilities: (this list is illustrative and not all-inclusive)1. Assess difficulties of referred students through appropriate diagnostic and testing practices, including classroom observation.2. Administer tests and recommend placement for all exceptional and new students as designated.3. Help identify all types of exceptional children with the special education program and participate in the assessment of appropriate placement of the child.4. Maintain case records on all referred students.5. Recommend corrective procedures and specific activities for teachers and other staff personnel to meet the special education child's needs.6. Conduct individual and group therapeutic counseling for students when appropriate.7. Confer with teachers and parents whenever appropriate.8. Consult on special educational needs of mentally retarded, emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, slow learners, visually impaired, hearing impaired, and other handicapped or gifted children.9. Attend case conferences on the placement of individual students; including but not limited to the district and BOCES level Committee on Special Education meetings.10. Serve as consultant and resource person on learning handicaps, classroom behavior, and mental health topics for teachers and other school personnel.11. Interpret the school psychological services to staff members and parents.12. Prepare and submit reports on handicapped children and other special reports as required or requested by the Special Education Supervisor.13. Serve as a consultant for special education classes and work closely with the students in such classes.14. Cooperate with and utilize the services of other agencies to minimize duplication of effort and maximize use of available resources.15. Attend staff, Profession and inter-agency meetings.16. Assist with and participate in in-service training of school personnel.17. Encourage and initiate research and help to use research findings for solution of school problems.18. Keep abreast of new developments in the field by active attendance in professional conferences and being familiar with current research and technical literature and new programs and materials.19. Assist teachers in diagnostics and prescribing appropriate programs for children with learning disorders both of a perceptual nature as well as those learning disorders occurring from emotional problems.20. Make recommendations on ways to assist a student referred to him for examination.21. Conduct individual, group and facilitative therapy for students whose diagnosed problems would benefit from behavioral modification.22. Participate in in-service training programs.23. Write behavioral objectives on at least a semi-annual basis to assess where the child is at and to determine where the child will be at the completion of these periods of time as a result of therapy sessions given.Terms of Employment: 10-monthSalary: Starting at $41,970 per UBTA salary schedule/contractJob Qualifications:1. Possession or eligible for NYS School Psychology Certification; 2. Successful experience working as a psychologist with regular school students;3. Teaching experience desirable, particularly with special education students;4.
