Overview
Maintenance Trades Helper (WAFB-2024-21953):
Bowhead is looking for a Full-Time Maintenance Trades Helper to assist with the day-to-day maintenance of the Base Telephone System (BTS). This role supports the Site Manager and Telecommunications Mechanic II by performing various tasks required for maintaining Inside Plant (ISP) and Outside Plant (OSP) cable and equipment. The Maintenance Trades Helper assists with performing preventive maintenance inspections (PMIs) and scheduled tests on systems to ensure compliance with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) specifications and contractual standards. This position is essential for ensuring system reliability and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
The Maintenance Trades helper will perform Inside Plant/Outside Plant installation, operation & maintenance. Must be able to use tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers; hoists; saws; drills; and wrenches; to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices. They will be a flexible “jack of all trades”.
Supporting Job duties to include but not limited to:
Assist in maintaining ISP and OSP cable and equipment as identified in contractual requirements.
Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMIs) and scheduled tests on telephone switches, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and backup power systems.
Document test results to ensure compliance with OEM specifications and contractual standards.
Elevate identified issues and trends to the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) within one workday.
Inspect and maintain maintenance holes, handholes, and building terminals by ensuring cables are tagged, ducts are sealed, and maintenance holes are cleaned of mud and debris.
Update the Communication Vault and Conduit (CVC) database with accurate and up-to-date information.
Perform system cross-connect and disconnect services as part of operation and maintenance (O&M) requirements.
Conduct cable analysis, including reviewing records, identifying bad pairs, determining cable fill rates, and reporting findings to the COR.
Assist in locating, staking, and marking of buried conduits or cables within specified timelines for emergency, priority, or routine requirements.
Maintain detailed inspection, maintenance, and repair records to ensure accessibility for government review.
Support cable installation and repair activities by documenting test results and updating the CVC database.
Respond to emergencies, outages, and alerts, providing services 24/7 as required.
Qualifications
Ability to assist with maintenance and inspection tasks for ISP and OSP infrastructure.
Capability to inspect maintenance holes, handholes, and terminals, ensuring cables are tagged, ducts sealed, and maintenance areas cleaned.
Experience in electronics; instrumentation; and computer systems.
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts. To receive and respond to instructions/assignments, must be able to read, write and speak English.
Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time
Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to attain a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
