Indian Health Service Medical Technician (Laboratory) in Whiteriver, Arizona

Summary This position serves as a Medical Technician within the Laboratory Department at the Whiteriver Service Unit (WRSU), Whiteriver, and the Cibecue Health Center Arizona. The incumbent is responsible for the application, modification and adaption of analytical methods and procedures in the performance of a variety of tests/examinations of human tissue, fluids and/or other substances in the clinical laboratory. Performs a wide range of clinical laboratory tests/examinations per requests by medical staff for use in clinical diagnosis, patient screening, monitoring patient therapy and status and other authorized purposes. Instruct patients and/or hospital personnel in the collection, preservation, and transport of specimens. Provides guidance, direction and training to ancillary technicians and other personnel when designated as "in charge" of assigned sections/specializations. Performs preventive maintenance, periodic inspection, and performance testing of equipment and instruments together with the maintenance of appropriate records. Performance of laboratory procedures which involves implementing new methods by performing, evaluating, and modifying any method not currently carried out in the laboratory. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Perform a variety of standardized tests and examinations under normal technical supervision. OR; Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study of at least 24 semester hours in subjects such as Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Banking, and Microbiology. GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: A working knowledge of the methods, techniques and practices appropriate to medical technology and their practical application to clinical laboratory work. GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Skill in calibrating and operating analytical instruments sufficient to independently perform recurring tests and analyses. Understanding of related disciplines such as microbiology, chemistry, physiology anatomy and their relationship to medical technology. OR; One year of graduate education in clinical laboratory science or a related field. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. This position has promotion potential to the GS-7 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
