Job Description:

This employee is responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program for adaptive physical education and meeting the duties of teaching as outlined in laws and policies. The teacher is responsible for the development, implementation, and modification of each students Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The teacher also conducts student assessments, utilizes data-based methods to guide instruction and to monitor student progress, and develops and implements researched and evidence- based teaching strategies.

Primary Functions

  • Develops and administers Physical Education classes consistent with school district goals and objectives
  • Teaches knowledge of, and develops skills and abilities in movement patterns and motor skills; concepts related to health, physical fitness, and the value of physical activity for a lifetime
  • Develops students\' concepts in leadership, teamwork, responsibility and social skills; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and appropriate feedback to regarding student progress, expectations, and goals
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in physical educational activities, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student\'s needs, including students with special needs
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws
  • Encourages parental involvement in students\' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school\'s standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within physical education and grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records
  • Inspects equipment and field areas used to ensure they are in good and safe working order
  • Supervises one primary adaptive PE paraprofessional

Secondary Functions

  • Supervise class field trips and classroom outings as needed.
  • Coordinate and/or lead Community Engagement Departments physical education activities.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.\
Requirements:

Educational, Training, and Licensure Requirements

  1. Bachelor\'s degree required. Master\'s degree preferred. Must have a K-12 Endorsement in Physical Education.
  2. Experience teaching students with cognitive delays/disabilities preferred.
  3. Certification in either low-incidence or high-incidence, preferred.
  4. Must successfully complete all required orientation and training conducted by Heartspring staff.
  5. Must maintain NCI certification (annual).
  6. Must maintain CPR certification.

Physical Requirements

  1. Able to perform significant, prolonged, and frequent amounts of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, squatting, bending, twisting, reaching, and kneeling.
  2. Regular lifting of up to 10 pounds.
  3. Occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds.
  4. Frequent use of computer and keyboard.
