Interior, US Fish and Wildlife Service SUPERVISORY FISH BIOLOGIST in Williamstown, West Virginia

Summary This position is a SUPERVISORY FISH BIOLOGIST, GS- 0482-12 working in Williamstown, WV for the R5-Lower Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office. Responsibilities As a SUPERVISORY FISH BIOLOGIST your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Leads, develops, and conducts biological surveys addressing fish community priorities relating to the spread of invasive carp (silver carp, bighead carp, grass carp, and/or black carp) in the Ohio River Basin emphasizing scientific integrity and credibility. Supervises subordinates including biologists and technicians assigning work based on knowledge, skills and abilities of lower graded positions, mentors and provides guidance to entry level staff, ensures overall station safety and security, and fosters a safe work environment that creates opportunities for staff. Works collaboratively with other Fish and Wildlife Service units as well as other Federal, State, Tribal, and non-government agencies to promote, develop, implement, and evaluate fishery priorities targeting invasive carp. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Only experience and education obtained by 07/01/2024 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification. Basic Requirement: Possess a Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in biological sciences that included (1) at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; and (2) at least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate.); OR Possess a combination of education and experience that includes courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualification [GS-12] One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors) performing work related to aquatic invasive species prevention, response, detection, control, and/or management. Specialized experience includes: 1) developing, conducting, and evaluating complex fishery investigations related to aquatic invasive species; 2) experience with traditional fishery gear as well as genetic tools used to detect the presence of rare or novel fish species; 3) developing, fostering, and maintaining partnerships with multiple federal, state, and academic partners to support aquatic invasive species project and research priorities across a large geographic scope (basin-wide); 4) supervising or leading lower graded employees; and 5) managing all office- and project-related administrative needs including budget planning, safety compliance, travel, and time and attendance. PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society. GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
