The Arc Erie County is looking for an Adaptive Physical Education Teacher!

What you'll be doing: As ourAdaptive Physical Education Teacherin ourGreen Acres Preschool (Tonawanda, NY)program, you will be planning & implementing adaptive physical education programs (including swimming sessions) for students with developmental disabilities within the education program.

You will be responsible for…

  • Preparing detailed lesson plans 1 week in advance of implementation

  • Communicating w/ parents regarding progress of respective children

  • Participating in in-service trainings & ad hoc committee meetings

    What we need from you:

    Master's or Bachelor's degree AND

    Permanent or Initial New York State Certification in Physical Education/Adaptive Phys. Ed. AND

    Currently certified in Multimedia First Aid, or comparable, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation; Advanced Life Saving

Position Summary:

Plans and implements adaptive physical education programs for students with developmental disabilities within the education program. Develops and implements group program sessions and specialized related events/programs. Works within the school's software management system regarding attendance and delivery of service.

Reporting Relationship:

Receives supervision from the building Principal. Provides direct supervision of teacher assistants during adaptive physical education classes.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides adaptive physical education experiences, including swimming sessions, where applicable, to students within the program in conjunction with specific Individualized Education Plan (IEP) objectives

  • Prepares detailed lesson plans one week in advance of implementation, outlining specific activities, goals and objectives as they relate to each student and the materials to be used

  • Communicates with parents, as appropriate, regarding the adaptive physical education program and progress of respective children

  • Coordinates programs as requested by the Principal

  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, Agency Policies, and administrative regulations

  • Prepares and maintains work setting, equipment, and supplies in accordance with health and safety requirements

  • Plans and documents a daily schedule according to assigned workload

  • Keeps informed of the current educational trends in this discipline as well as current research in proven appropriate methodologies and practices

  • Attends and participates in parent conferences and team meetings

  • Participates in in-service training and ad hoc committee meetings for the purpose of assuring maximum educational opportunities for students

  • Utilizes staff handbook in order to learn and follow agency policies and procedures

  • Selects and utilizes or, when needed, recommends through outlined ordering procedures, appropriate materials and equipment to fulfill specific goals and objectives

  • Consults with other members of each student's educational team, including school program staff, parents or agency personnel, in order to best ensure a comprehensive coordinated approach to meeting each student's needs

  • Reports immediately all accidents or incidents to designated staff and completes required related reports in a timely and accurate manner

  • Advises supervisor of any relevant information regarding job-related responsibilities in a timely fashion

  • Conducts and records an annual inventory of equipment and supplies as scheduled by supervisor

  • Performs other related duties as requested by supervisor

  • Maintains and protects confidential or other sensitive information such as Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) as defined in the agency's information security policy

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Bachelor's DegreeandPermanent or Initial New York State Certification in Physical Education/Adaptive Physical Education

OR

Master's DegreeandPermanent or Professional/Initial New York State Certification in Physical Education/Adaptive Physical Education. Master's and Permanent Certification staff are expected to perform in the above areas of responsibility with greater independence, skill and efficiency than an individual with Bachelor's Degree and Initial Certification.

PLUS

Current certification in Multi Media First Aid, or comparable, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation; Advanced Life Saving

Participation in an Adaptive Aquatics Program preferred

Demonstrated skill in formulating and documenting appropriate behavioral objectives for students with developmental disabilities.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Physical demands and Exposure Risk outlined on attached form (A)

The ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, sit, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, climb flight of stairs; good physical strength and be able to lift/transfer a minimum of 50 lbs. unassisted and is able to assist in two-three person lifts as necessary; Must have the ability to see, hear, listen, speak clearly, good motor coordination; grip, strength, eye-hand coordination; Must be able to perform physical tasks outlined in the education program's Safe Student Movement Program manual

  • Mental Requirements:

The ability to perform critical thinking and complex problem solving skills, write in clear, organized manner, show good judgment, independent action, prioritizing, following directions; Works independently, as well as cooperatively with others; Be approachable, enthusiastic and meet job related tasks accordingly

  • Human Relations Skills:

The ability to communicate with individuals in a positive manner, both oral and written, serve as an appropriate role model to co-workers and program participants; Receive supervision instruction in a positive manner; Adhere to agency's policies, procedures, rules and regulations; Maintains a professional attitude and appearance at all times

  • Equipment Operation:

The ability to operate office equipment, such as computer, copier, fax machine, and laminator; the ability to utilize and set up various physical education equipment in providing students with diverse experiences
