Perform routine and special laboratory tests in the areas of hematology, chemistry, blood bank, serology, urinalysis, and microbiology. Specifically conduct routine hematology including brief descriptive report of morphology on routine and abnormal differentials with referral of critical abnormal findings to the pathologist; conduct routine coagulation tests, urinalysis and feces examination, set up of concentrations for ova and parasites, pregnancy tests; perform testing on routine and special chemistry and blood gases; perform bacteriology testing including: starting cultures, staining and reading Gram stains, organism identification and setting up and reading susceptibility tests; perform blood banking including blood typing, antibody screens, antibody identification, crossmatch, quality control, record keeping and drawing patient blood for blood bank testing; perform serology (ASO, Cold Agglutinins, RA Test, Monospot, CRP); prepare reagents, solutions, and stains. Manage the collection of samples for laboratory testing which involve performing venipunctures and arterial punctures (radial artery only) and performing heelsticks and fingersticks to obtain capillary samples. Instruct patients, nursing personnel, and others, in the proper collection of various specimens, for analysis within the laboratory. Manage proper labeling, handling, logging and disposition of specimens. Perform, monitor, troubleshoot, and record quality control procedures according to laboratory procedures. Prepare quality control materials for use, i.e., chemistry, coagulation and hematology controls. Record results of quality control testing and report out of control values to specialist, carry out quality control of reagent systems such as in hematology, chemistry, blood bank and microbiology; troubleshoot out of control tests to determine cause and take necessary steps to solve the problem before reporting patient results. Understand the significance of tests used and the relationship of the results as it relates to the clinical state of the patient. Assist with developing and evaluating new procedures, teaching students and training new laboratory personnel. Maintain instruments used, prepare reagents and staining solutions as needed and assist with tasks to ensure the efficient and appropriate functioning of the laboratory. Understand prioritization based on patient needs and request additional help when required. Assist in maintaining adequate supply levels in areas worked to ensure appropriate functioning of the laboratory. Record and report laboratory test results and LIS report generation, printing, checking, sorting, and routing. Maintain and promote a safe laboratory environment for all patients, visitors, and staff through compliance with infection control and other safety policies procedures.
