JOB DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs various work activities in support of the County s Solid Waste Management Program. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Operate scale, answers phones, provide customer service including collecting fees from customers and deposit fees according to prescribed procedures. Inspect loads entering the landfill to determine their contents and determine correct disposal locations. Assist the Assistant Solid Waste Administrator as necessary. Assist with providing educational materials and program updates regarding solid waste programs in the county through site visits, brochures, and fact sheets; lectures to school classes, civic organizations and community groups; and by participating in educational workshops for operators, facility operators and others. Assist with data, records, and other pertinent data for HHW, recycling and landfill activities, using computer databases and prepares and presents reports as required. Assist with the proper operation of the county HHW waste facility and helps with HHW collections for all county communities; ensuring the proper receiving and preparing materials for disposal and reuse. Assist with county s recycling program: SCORE report, recycling contract, maintenance of facilities, etc. Available to assist in other departments as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned or required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: Basic computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel. Knowledge of the proper handling of materials such as tires, appliances, florescent bulbs, paint, household cleaners, electronics, and similar items. Ability to inspect, recognize and retrieve hazardous and similar waste materials prior to disposal. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, superiors, external public officials and the general public. Ability to operate motor vehicles. Ability to maintain accurate written records and prepare basic reports. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
