The Pharmacy Benefits Specialist at Novant Health works closely with the Pharmacy Benefits Manager (PBM), Benefits Consultant(s), and the People and Culture team to provide Novant Team Members with a remarkable experience. This role involves scrutinizing pharmaceutical trends and drug usage patterns to identify cost-effective medication alternatives, routinely assessing pharmacy benefit contracts, pinpointing opportunities for clinical programs, and acting as the go-to expert on pharmacy benefits. In addition, the specialist designs educational initiatives to boost comprehension of pharmacy benefits and compiles pharmacy benefit data for strategic planning purposes. They ensure that the employee pharmacy benefit aligns with the pharmacy’s strategic plan and aids in the appraisal and application of tools to enhance the efficiency of benefit administration. The specialist is also a member of cross-functional teams that evaluate and suggest modifications to the formulary and coverage policies.

Qualifications
Education: 4 Year Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy or PharmD, required. Master's degree in healthcare/business administration or related field, preferred.
Experience: Registered pharmacist with 5 years pharmacy practice experience, required. Two years of applicable pharmacy benefits, managed care, or applicable clinical and business experience; preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Licensed to practice pharmacy (RPh or PharmD) in the applicable state(s) and in good standing with the board of Pharmacy(ies), required.
Additional Skills Required: The Pharmacy Benefits Specialist assumes responsibility for:
Collaborating with the Pharmacy Benefits Manager (PBM), Benefits Consultant(s), and People and Culture to develop, implement, and administer the pharmacy benefit program for Novant Health Team members.
Supporting the Healthy Lifestyles Program (HLP), and other health and wellness benefit programs for Novant Health Team members in collaboration with People and Culture.
Analyzing pharmaceutical trends, formularies, and drug utilization patterns to optimize cost-effective medication options while maintaining quality patient care.
Conducting regular reviews of pharmacy benefit contracts, negotiating agreements to optimize cost savings, and assess contract performance metrics.
Serving as the subject matter expert on pharmacy benefits and providing guidance to internal stakeholders, including clinicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals, regarding benefit coverage and medication-related inquiries.
Developing and delivering educational programs or materials for employees, and healthcare providers to enhance understanding of pharmacy benefits, drug utilization, and cost-effective medication alternatives.
Preparing and interpreting pharmacy benefit data, analyzing and presenting findings to stakeholders to support decision-making and strategic planning related to the pharmacy benefit plan.
Ensuring that the employee pharmacy benefit aligns with the pharmacy strategic plan, including initiatives of the pharmacy operations team, the value and outcomes team, and the pharmacy business team.
Partnering with the PBM to develop and manage prior authorizations, step therapy programs, and medication adherence initiatives, ensuring appropriate utilization and controlling costs.
Assisting in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of vendors, software, or tools to streamline processes and improve efficiency in benefit administration.
Participating in interdisciplinary teams to review and recommend changes to the formulary, coverage policies, high utilizer workgroups, or benefit design to align with evolving healthcare landscape and patient needs.
Communicate pharmacy benefits design changes with relevant operational teams.
